Well, the ax has swung in the Motor City, and three assistant coaches for the Detroit Lions were victims of it. So yes, it is a period of upheaval as this team takes the long flight to the United Kingdom for another installment of the NFL International Series, as they face the Kansas City Chiefs in action that will begin at 9:30 AM ET at Wembley Stadium in London. BetAnySports customers can continue their wagers even after the opening kickoff, if they are awake, as they challenge the NFL betting odds through the mechanism of Live Betting Extra.

In the NFL betting odds posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Chiefs are laying points:

    • Kansas City Chiefs -3.5 (-105)
    • Detroit Lions +3.5 (-115)
    • Over 45 points -110
    • Under 45 points -110

The Lions made the playoffs last season, but this year they lost their first five games before barely scraping by with an overtime win over the Chicago Bears. Currently they are 1-6 straight-up and 1-5-1 ATS. Obviously somebody’s head had to roll, and head coach Jim Caldwell, who won’t last beyond this season if things continue to go the way they are, fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, along with offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn and his assistant, Terry Heffernan.

There were good reasons for this, including this team’s inability to run the football or protect quarterback Matthew Stafford. And that pretty much covers everything they want to do. You can’t convert just one out of your 10 third-down chances and hope to win ball games, and that is exactly what happened against the Minnesota Vikings, who sacked Stafford seven times on the way to a 28-19 victory.

No team in the NFL has fewer rushing yards and then Detroit. In fact, you can find eight running backs around the NFL who have more yards all by themselves. So obviously there is something wrong. Ameer Abdullah, the rookie out of Nebraska, has not been as productive as was hoped, and he is averaging 3.6 yards per carry. Obviously part of that responsibility has to go to the offensive line, hence the shakeup in the coaching staff. But what is really going to change, when it comes right down to it?

Kansas City has, for the last couple of weeks, been in the process of trying to come up with a solution after running back Jamaal Charles went down for the season with a knee injury. They may have come up with something last week with the performance of Charcandrick West, who had 110 yards against Pittsburgh. BetAnySports patrons realize that the Chiefs’ 23-13 win over the Steelers came with Landry Jones at the controls instead of Ben Roethlisberger, but after having lost five straight games, they will take their victories any way they can get them. They look like they are getting healthier in the offensive line as well, as Jeff Allen should be back in the fold on a full-time basis, assuming the right tackle position and allowing Eric Fisher, a former #1 overall draft pick, to go back over to the left tackle spot.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs have their own difficulties in keeping quarterback Alex Smith’s jersey clean. Smith has been sacked 25 times, although his problems rest not so much in his people not being able to protect, but by holding the ball too long. And he has directed Kansas City to just 33% success on third downs. That has to improve.
