Week 2 NFL Betting Lines – Texans vs Panthers
Texans Make Change Behind Center vs. Panthers
By Charles Jay
The Houston Texans did not have a good coming-out party for the 2015 season as they suffered a loss at home. But they hope to remedy that with a new quarterback behind center as they pay a visit to Charlotte for a date with the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium, starting at 1 PM ET. While BetAnySports customers can get reduced juice wagering before the action starts, they can also keep the NFL betting alive during the contest through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.
Houston suffered all kinds of difficulty last week in the process of dropping a 27-20 decision against the Kansas City Chiefs at NRG Stadium. And they only made the game that close with an eleven-point fourth-quarter. Taking them down for their only touchdown of the afternoon was Ryan Mallett, who had been despondent about losing the starting quarterback position to Brian Hoyer. We know that because the Texans were the subject of this year’s HBO “Hard Knocks” series.
Week 2 NFL Betting Lines – Texans vs Panthers
In the NFL betting lines that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, Carolina is the favorite at home:
- Carolina Panthers -3
- Houston Texans +3
- Over 39 points -110
- Under 39 points -110
Carolina had some difficulty of its own on offense, putting together just 243 yards in a rather drab 20-9 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. In this game, their shortcomings in the passing game were exposed, and that probably becomes more of a problem as they have to deal with the aggressive Houston pass rush.
Anybody who saw the HBO series is familiar with the temperament of Houston coach Bill O’Brien, and you also know, from watching the show, that Houston made a decision after the first two pre-season games to go with Hoyer as the starter, mostly because of the fact that he had more experience. Mallett was not happy at all, and that was somewhat expected. But now another switch has been made; Hoyer, who completed 18 of his 34 passes for 236 yards, has been yanked in favor of Mallett, who will now make his third NFL start.
Hoyer was sacked four times by Kansas City, and were not so sure that Mallett presents more in the way of mobility, but there is probably a bigger upside to the former Arkansas star. BetAnySports patrons know that Arian Foster, the Texans’ standout running back, is out of action, and the hope is that this team won’t fall behind very early like it did last week, which will enable it to establish more of a rushing attack. Houston ran the ball more than anyone in the NFL last season, but there was too much of an imbalance between passing and rushing in the season opener, as they put it in the air 47 times but ran it only 21 times.
Carolina is not likely to be so explosive as to put Houston behind the eight-ball early on. Wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin’s loss (by way of season-ending injury) is something that severely limits quarterback Cam Newton’s options. So aside from a 37-yard reception by Ted Ginn, there was nothing much from the Panthers that went far down the field.
Carolina is the two-time defending NFC South champion, but they did, after all, win that division in more or less a “default” fashion. It is likely that the get some headaches from Houston’s front seven, namely JJ Watt, who had two sacks against the Chiefs last Sunday.
