Week 1 NFL Odds – Panthers Begin Quest For Third Straight Division Crown vs. Jags
By Charles Jay
In the week 1 NFL odds odds posted on Panthers vs Jags, according to the people at BetAnySports the Panthers will be the road favorites:
Carolina Panthers -4
Jacksonville Jaguars +4
Over 42.5 points -110
Under 42.5 points -110
The Carolina Panthers captured their second straight title in the NFC South last season, and appeared to do so almost by default. Maybe this division is stronger this season, which would require more effort out of Carolina if it hopes to return to the playoffs. On Sunday, September 13, that quest will begin as they visit the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have a lot of work to do to overcome the football odds this season, and again that kicks off at 1 PM ET at EverBank Field. BetAnySports customers have a tremendous treat in store, as they can place wagers on the game even after the opening kickoff, playing the side, total and various props through the magic of Live Betting Extra.
For Jacksonville, this would appear to be another step in the rebuilding process. But they don’t want to be one of those clubs that is doing such a thing all the time. Blake Bortles took his lumps as a rookie, but the team is expecting more out of him as a second-year quarterback. Last season he threw for 2908 yards and 11 touchdowns, but he was intercepted 17 times and was experiencing arm problems most of the way – at least that is what has been revealed recently.
Carolina got a gutsy performance out of Cam Newton last season, is the former Heisman Trophy winner overcame ankle and rib injuries, in addition to a serious car accident, to get this team to the post-season with a record of 7-8-1, as well as a first-round playoff victory over Arizona. But Newton may have to upgrade his numbers for the Panthers to take the next step; he was only 58.5% accurate, with an 18-12 ratio of touchdowns to interceptions.
Nobody seemed to want the NFC South title last season, and it is interesting to note that the boo birds were out for Carolina coach Ron Rivera, calling for his firing before his team finally came down the stretch with four straight victories to earn the right to advance to the next stage. There appears to be a never ending search for help at the wide receiver position, and while it was fortuitous that Kelvin Benjamin became a nice contributor as a rookie (73 catches, 1008 yards, nine touchdowns), he still needs people aside from tight end Greg Olsen to complement him. So Devin Funchess was the second-round draft choice out of Michigan, and Jarrett Boykin and Ted Ginn were signed as a free agents. There are no notable enhancements to the backfield, so in the wake of the departure of DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart will have to shoulder more of a burden.
BetAnySports patrons are aware that Jacksonville is needed help in many areas. Head coach Gus Bradley, who had been the defensive coordinator in Seattle prior to his hiring, has been looking for people who can rush the passer, which led to the signing of Jared Odrick in the off-season. But a huge disappointment came after drafting Dante Fowler with the third overall pick, as Fowler injured his knee at the rookie mini-camp and will have to sit out the entire season. On offense, football odds bettors should keep an eye on running back TJ Yeldon, the rookie out of Alabama who has a penchant for explosiveness but fumbles the ball a little too much.
