There is an interesting twist to this matchup, because you may recall that Tom Savage started the season as the quarterback for the Texans, but he was sacked six times in just one half of football against Jacksonville in the opener. Head coach Bill O’Brien was quick with the hook, summoning rookie DeShaun Watson, the first-round pick from defending national champion Clemson, and although it was a little too late to salvage anything out of a 29-7 loss, eventually Watson started to make things happen in a big way. There was a five-game period in which Houston scored totals of 33, 57, 34, 33, and 38 points. But then Watson suffered a knee injury that took him out for the season. And suddenly, the Texans became a lot less dangerous.

They have now lost six of their last seven games, and that included a home defeat at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers last weekend. During that 26-16 loss, Savage was knocked out of the game with a concussion, and controversy ensued. There are a lot of questions being asked by the NFL as to why he was allowed to return to the field, particularly because his hands were twitching when he went down. What O’Brien and the training staff did or did not see becomes a major point of debate. Regardless, TJ Yates, who won a previous tour of duty with the team actually won a playoff game (the first in franchise history), was pressed into action and completed 14 of 26 passes for 175 yards. He will get the start this week.

The Texans had only 203 yards against the Jaguars in the season opener, and Jacksonville has continued to be a defense that strikes fear in the hearts of opponents. They lead the NFL with 47 sacks, and have the NFL’s top turnover margin, including 19 interceptions. No team has allowed fewer yards or points on a per-drive basis, and no one is better inside the red zone. The Jags have permitted just 5.3 yards per attempt in the passing game, and to put it mildly, that compares very favorably with Houston’s figure of 7.6. Of course, Jacksonville took one of Houston’s best assets in the off-season when they signed cornerback AJ Bouye.

One of the things that might interest BetAnySports patrons the most is that Blake Bortles has them playing a lot more under control this season. Last week, against Seattle, he was efficient, going 18-27 for 268 yards, and he’s thrown only eight interceptions on the season, which is commendable, considering that he had developed a reputation as an error-prone quarterback. Jacksonville bases its offensive approach around running the football, and they have gotten a nice effort out of rookie Leonard Fournette, who has scored eight touchdowns with 923 total yards. The Jaguars are the only team in the NFL that has run the ball more than it has put it in the air.

This game is critical for Jacksonville, because at the moment the Jags are one game ahead of Tennessee in the AFC South, and if the New England Patriots happen to lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers, they will gain a tie for the #2 AFC playoff seed. With a defense like theirs, and the success they’ve had on the road (including a 30-9 victory over the Steelers), this is a real dangerous team.
