Who is going to be in the lineup on Sunday when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit Sports Authority Field to play the Denver Broncos? That was very much in question late in the week, and it may not look too good for couple of their stars.

But maybe they will be okay at the quarterback position. Ben Roethlisberger was actually taken out of the wild-card round game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a mild separated shoulder, but when it was crunch time, he was put back in the game and led his team to a winning field goal, with extraordinary help from the Bengals and their over-aggressive tactics. They will take on the Broncos, who will start Peyton Manning at quarterback, at 4:40 PM ET on Sunday, and CBS will carry it live. The Steelers also have to wonder about the availability of Antonio Brown, the wide receiver who caught 136 passes during the regular season, and was the victim of a vicious hit on the part of Vontaze Burfict in the waning moments of last week’s game. As of late in the week, he was going through the NFL’s concussion protocol, and obviously had not practiced. As for DeAngelo Williams, who has been trying to heal a foot injury over the last two weeks, his status is a little more doubtful.

As of this writing, there was not a total posted on this game because of the uncertain status of these key offensive players. The Steelers could probably weather the loss of Williams more than the others, because they got, surprisingly, some production out of the backfield combination of Fitzgerald Toussaint and Jordan Todman, who had 128 yards between them. It will be impossible to replace Roethlisberger, especially in this playoff setting.

Big Ben, in talking to reporters earlier in the week, mentioned that if he couldn’t throw the ball downfield 25-30 yards, he would be hurting the team. And he had not been throwing in practice. Let’s put it this way – if there is any way humanly possible that he could be out there, he will be.

The Steelers have been the beneficiaries of good fortune in getting here. Having Manning at the controls might bring a bit of uncertainty for the Broncos, because of his 17 interceptions, but Denver has the top defense in the league, allowing just 4.6 yards per play and only 3.3 yards per rushing attempt. If the Steelers wind up one-dimensional, and Roethlisberger is at 50% or thereabouts, this is a tough day for fans in the Steel City.
