Redskins vs Eagles – CJ’s Take:

Not much was expected of the Eagles this season under first-year coach Doug Pederson, and in fact, Sam Bradford was expected to be the starting quarterback. But Bradford was dealt off when the Minnesota Vikings made them an offer they could not refuse. That put rookie Carson Wentz in the precarious position of having to start on opening day despite not having a full training camp. Wentz nonetheless showed a lot of poise at the beginning and looked very good as the team got off to a 3-0 start. But then defensive coordinators starting to develop game plans to combat the NFL’s #2 overall draft pick out of North Dakota State, and Wentz has had the going considerably rougher since. Philadelphia has now lost five of its last six games, and Wentz has a ratio of 12 touchdown passes to 11 interceptions.

The Redskins were the NFC East champions last season, and they are arguably better on the offensive side that they were during 2015. Kirk Cousins has become very familiar now with Jay Gruden’s West Coast offense, but the rest of this division has improved, particularly the Dallas Cowboys, who are running away with the title.

The Redskins now find themselves behind in the wild-card race, as they trail the New York Giants in the NFC East and they also watched as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have gotten hot. Cousins went into the game with Arizona having thrown for 369 yards over his previous four contests, but was limited to just 271 by the Cardinals’ secondary, which is filled with playmakers. Arizona is inconsistent offensively, but Washington had a difficult time dealing with David Johnson, who had 175 total yards from scrimmage. And the Washington defense has had a hard time getting other teams off the field; in fact, they have yielded 36.8 yards per drive, and no other team in the league has done worse than that.

So maybe there is an opening for the Philadelphia offense here, but this is a team that lacks playmakers. BetAnySports patrons should expect that Ryan Mathews, the running back who has been sitting out time with injury, will be back in the lineup, but that only makes the Eagles a little more competitive. Unbelievably, Wentz had to throw the ball 60 times last Sunday, while the running backs only had 15 carries. The rookie was picked off three times by an aggressive Cincinnati defense in the 32-14 loss. He found himself under pressure in the previous meeting between the Redskins and Eagles, on October 16, as Washington came away with a 27-20 victory. In that one, the rookie was sacked five times.

For those of you looking for trends related to the NFL odds, Washington has played “over” the total in 15 of its last 17 games. With a team that gains more yards per drive than anyone in the league, that kind of a result is always a possibility.
