Packers vs Bears – CJ’s Take:
It would be almost impossible for Green Bay to duplicate what they did last week, as they just about chased the Seattle Seahawks out of Lambeau Field. They intercepted Russell Wilson five times and got solid performance out of Aaron Rodgers (246 yards, three touchdowns) in the 38-10 victory. Rodgers, who had gone 14 games without a 300-yard effort, has now reached that plateau in four of his last eight games. During that stretch, he has thrown 22 touchdown passes with only three interceptions, so the MVP talk has begun. Overall, Rodgers is 65% accurate with 32 TD throws.
The Bears have had a star-crossed season, losing not one, but two quarterbacks to injury. And the status of coach John Fox for the future is unknown. With a 3-10 record, they are not going to be involved in the post-season, but maybe they see light at the end of the tunnel, especially with the effort of rookie running back Jordan Howard, who has gained 969 yards. Also, there is something encouraging to see out of the play of Matt Barkley, previously a failure in Philadelphia, who has led this team to a 26-6 victory over the San Francisco 49ers and has made them competitive to the end in losses to the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions. Barkley has some zip in his arm, and that’s what a lot of people saw when he was a young prodigy at USC.
He has been missing weapons lately, but he gets one of them back this week as Al Shaun Jeffrey, the team’s leading receiver, comes off a four-game suspension. Also, Cameron Meredith has been developing into a useful target (44 catches, 588 yards), although he did drop a pass that could have made something of a difference last week in the loss to Detroit.
There are lots of question marks around the Bears, left to figure out what they’re going to do with Jay Cutler, who has a contract option coming up. And the aforementioned Fox, who had previously led Carolina and Denver to the Super Bowl, may or may not get another opportunity to coach this team in 2017.
The Packers have had to solve massive problems in both the offensive and defensive backfield. As far as the secondary is concerned, they have gotten a couple of their injured players back, but the ground game is something there still playing around with. Ty Montgomery, converted wide receiver, has been taking a lot of snaps, and they still hope that Christine Michael is going to be a viable option going forward. The Packers passed the ball 25 times and ran it 30 times against Seattle.
The Bears’ pass rush has really turned up the volume the last three games, sacking quarterbacks at the highest rate in the league over that period. But according to the comprehensive website Pro Football Focus, Green Bay has the best pass-blocking offensive line in the league, so that might mitigate one of the things that Chicago does well.
