North Carolina Favored in Quick Lane Bowl over Rutgers
By Charles Jay
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights made the switch this season over to the Big 10, and college football bettors at BetAnySports may have thought they were going to get more substantial bowl opportunities. Well, at least they are in Big 10 country for their post-season appearance, but it is low-profile at best. Rutgers, which posted a 7-5 straight-up record this season (also 7-5 ATS), comes into this game with a rather capable passing attack, and has demonstrated that it can put up points against defenses that are somewhat soft. Some might say that the North Carolina Tar Heels fit that description. College football bettors will find out in the Quick Lane Bowl, which takes place at Ford Field in Detroit (home of the Lions) at 4:30 PM ET on Friday.
North Carolina comes into this game with a record that is all even at 6-6 straight-up, and they are 5-7 against the football pointspread. The program has been under fire this season, with all kinds of allegations about academic fraud. Unquestionably the NCAA will sort things out sooner or later, but that should not upset this team’s preparation for this ballgame, inasmuch as this team scored big victories in two of its last three games. And besides, the players could probably care less about academic fraud.
In the college football betting odds that a been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, North Carolina is favored by a field goal:
North Carolina Tar Heels -3 (-120)
Rutgers Scarlet Knights +3 (+100)
Over 67.5 points -110
Under 67.5 points -110
A lot of people have quipped that the last time North Carolina played in this building, it wasn’t the football team but the basketball team, on their way to winning the 2009 national championship. There is absolutely no question that Roy Williams’ hoopsters played much better defense than this UNC team, which gave up 35 points or more on seven different occasions. The interesting part of it is that this team has been able to win some shootouts, namely over teams like ACC runner-up Georgia Tech (48-43) and Pittsburgh (40-35). They also scored a very decisive victory over nasty neighbor Duke (45-20) coming down the stretch. But in the big rivalry game, which took place in the season finale against North Carolina State, they were trampled by a 35-7 score.
BetAnySports customers will see a rather interesting matchup of quarterbacks in this one; Gary Nova of Rutgers has a good arm, but to say he is inconsistent would be understating the case. Nova was good enough to throw for 404 yards against Michigan in a Rutgers victory, but was also intercepted five times against Penn State, and when it came to facing Big-10 powers like Nebraska, Wisconsin and Michigan State, he was a combined 24 out of 60. So yes, there is a certain “feast or famine” quality about him. And maybe it is the Knights’ good fortune that North Carolina is so permissive, as they have given up 29 touchdowns through the air.
North Carolina’s Marquise Williams is a bit of a different story; he may not be terrifically polished as a passer, but he has been good enough to complete 63% of his throws for 2870 yards, and in only one game was he intercepted more than once (that was the season opener). He also seems to play very well against good teams. Plus, unlike Nova, Williams is someone who can take control of a game with his ability to run, as he led the Tar Heels with 737 rushing yards.
