Division Leading Patriots Seek Payback Against Dolphins

    By Charles Jay

When the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots met in the opening game of the season, New England dominated the first half, but Miami came on very strong in the second half to send the Pats reeling. Now the Patriots like to think they are a different team, and indeed they are in command in the AFC East at the moment, with the biggest challenge ahead of them gaining home-field advantage for the playoffs. On Sunday these teams will meet at 1 PM ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA.

At the moment, Miami is fighting for its playoff life, sitting a game behind teams like the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans in the wild-card race. They had an opportunity last week at home, but blew a lead and let the Ravens create some distance in what ended up a 28-13 defeat. The Dolphins’ biggest concern at the moment is slowing down other teams that have found a blueprint in running the football against them. Last week the Ravens went for 183 yards on the ground, and the New York Jets and Denver Broncos ran all over them in the previous two games.

New England has rediscovered its running game in the second half of the season. Jonas Gray got the ball rolling with 199 yards against Indianapolis five weeks ago, and he’s gotten some help from the LeGarrette Blount, who was picked up after being waived by Pittsburgh. There is no question that the Patriots are much more well-rounded now as they have compensated for the season-ending injury to Stevan Ridley.

Miami is 7-6 straight-up on the season, and they are 7-5-1 against the football pointspread. New England is 10-3 straight-up, which ties them for the best record in the conference. The Patriots are 8-5 ATS.

In the NFL odds that have been posted on this game at BetAnySports, the Pats are considerable favorites:

    New England Patriots -7.5 (-105)
    Miami Dolphins +7.5 (-115)

    Over 48 points -110
    Under 48 points -110

After they lost that season-opener 30-23 to the Dolphins, and followed that with lukewarm performances against Minnesota and Oakland, and a 41-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, even their most ardent supporters were worried about the Patriots. But then they went on a seven-game winning streak, the feeding for division leaders along the way. Last week they were not at their best offensively, but still managed to score a 23-14 road victory over the San Diego Chargers. Tom Brady has now thrown for at least 250 yards in eight of the last nine games. On the season he has 30 touchdown passes with only seven interceptions, and his offensive line has done better than expected, permitting him to be sacked only 16 times, although that is also a by-product of Brady’s ability to release the ball quickly in what is, for the most part, a short passing offense.

Meanwhile, BetAnySports customers saw Ryan Tannehill get sacked six times last week by Baltimore, and the Miami faithful hope that they are not starting to see a degeneration of the pass protection unit that yielded 58 sacks last season. Those who analyze the NFL odds are well aware that another 8-8 finish by Miami will bring of questions as to whether head coach Joe Philbin will survive beyond this season.

New England gets to play to that of its last three games at Gillette Stadium, and that is good news, because they are 6-0 straight-up at home, scoring 34 points or more in four of the six games. Blount is averaging 4.8 yards per carry, and so there is every indication that the Pats will improve on the 89 rushing yards they posted in the first meeting with the Dolphins. This is a team that has been known to finish seasons very strong; since 2009, New England has an 18-3 straight-up record during the last quarter of the regular season schedule.
