NFL Odds – Saints vs Falcons Showdown Will Determine NFC South
By Charles Jay
As bad as things have seemed at times with the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints this season, there is still a lot of hope on the part of both of these teams that they will get to the post-season. The opportunity is in front of them on Sunday, as they face off in a game that will, in all probability, determine the winner of the NFC South division. Who will beat the NFL odds in this game? We find out at 1 PM ET at the Superdome in New Orleans.
The Saints come into this game with a record of 6-8, both straight-up and against the football pointspread. They took advantage of a Chicago Bears team that is limping at best and beat them at Soldier Field last week. Meanwhile, the Falcons failed at home, as they fell by a 27-20 score to the Pittsburgh Steelers, which has now created a one-game lead for the Saints in the division. By virtue of their overtime victory over New Orleans in the season opener, however, Atlanta will have the advantage in the tiebreaker if they can complete the season sweep of the Saints. Atlanta currently has a record of 5-9 straight-up and 7-7 ATS.
In the NFL odds that have been established on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Saints are favored at home:
New Orleans Saints -6.5
Atlanta Falcons +6.5
Over 56 points -110
Under 56 points -110
This is truly been a bizarre season for the Saints; at one point they had stretched out a home winning streak of 20 games with Sean Payton as their coach. But they have now lost four games in a row at the Superdome, and their latest was a disgrace, as they were slaughtered to the tune of 41-10 by the Carolina Panthers. But this team rebounded nicely with a 31-15 victory over the Bears. There has never been any question about the Saints’ ability to move the football; in fact, they have averaged 422 yards per game. But obviously the defense has been a major source of difficulty for them, and the feuding between Payton and the units coordinator, Rob Ryan, has spilled over into something ugly.
But as BetAnySports customers witnessed on Monday night, that defense rose to the occasion, allowing only 278 yards to Chicago. Now, NFL bettors should understand that it was a largely dysfunctional Bears offense on display, while Atlanta has it considerably more “together” at this time. It will be even better for them if they have wide receiver Julio Jones in the lineup. Jones had to sit out last week’s game with a hip injury, but when you have 448 yards receiving in the previous two contests, you don’t have to ask questions about whether it will be actually critical for them to have him in what amounts to a possible winner-take-all situation.
If New Orleans happens to win the game, they will clinch the division title and host a first-round playoff game. Then they will have the opportunity to reach the .500 plateau at Tampa Bay in the season’s final week. If the Falcons win, the Saints would have to score a victory over the Buccaneers and hope that Atlanta fails at home against Carolina in the season finale.
