NFL in London Week 8 – Falcons vs Lions
The Atlanta Falcons May Find Out There is No Home Away From Home
By Charles Jay
Is it possible that the Atlanta Falcons can continue to lose on the road, even if they are not the visiting team? That is something that we will certainly find out on Sunday as the Falcons venture to Wembley Stadium in London to take on the Detroit Lions.
This game provides football betting action at a special time, as it will go off at 9:30 AM ET, so as to be an afternoon game in the UK. The Lions are coming off a very dramatic comeback as they defeated the New Orleans Saints 24-23, while Atlanta didn’t produce any drama at all as they pretty much laid down for the Baltimore Ravens in a 29-7 defeat. Atlanta has now lost eleven of its last 12 road games. Detroit is 5-2 straight-up, and 4-3 against the spread. Atlanta is 2-5 straight-up and also against the number. It would seem that the clock is ticking on the tenure of head coach Mike Smith, who better get things turned around in a hurry or he could see the swinging door. Remember, the Falcons will have a bye week after this game.
NFL Betting Line – Falcons vs Lions: the Lions are laying a field goal and a hook:
Detroit Lions -3.5
Atlanta Falcons +3.5
Over 46.5 points -110
Under 46.5 points -110
Atlanta has now lost four games in a row and failed to cover the point spread in any of those games. They suffer from many things, including the inability to run the football with any degree of consistency. Before last season, they reached out for Steven Jackson, who for years had been a workhorse back for the St. Louis Rams. But Jackson has really never been 100% physically, and he may have “hit the wall” as many running backs do when they pass the age of 30. Atlanta managed 68 yards on sixteen attempts on the ground against Baltimore, and they have now allowed 412 yards per game on defense.
Detroit, by contrast, has one of the better defensive teams in the league, as they are holding teams to 290 yards per contest. They are completely capable of making Atlanta one-dimensional, because they are yielding only 3.3 yards per carry. So that’s a lot of pressure on quarterback Matt Ryan, who has thrown six interceptions in road games.
BetAnySports customers know that there is been quite a bit of injury news on the Detroit side, as it concerns Calvin Johnson, the future Hall of Fame wide receiver who has missed the last two games with a high ankle sprain. He has practiced, just a little, and he will be a game time decision on Sunday. Obviously his absence is felt, and that is exacerbated by the fact that some of the other guys who can catch passes on this team, including running back Reggie Bush and all three tight ends, are banged up.
Speaking of “banged-up,” by the way, that is about the state Atlanta’s offensive line is in right now. This is a team that has allowed fifteen sacks of Ryan, but five of them came in the game against the Ravens. They have lost two starters off that line, and rookie Jake Matthews is limping around with an ankle injury, although he obviously will play. There is no depth up front for the Falcons. They are also down to a third-team center now that they have lost both Joe Hawley and Peter Konz.
