What will the Buffalo Bills do to improve themselves under Rex Ryan? That’s a pretty good question for NFL futures bettors to ponder as the former head man with the New York Jets embarks on what he acknowledges will be his last chance to be a head coach in the NFL.

The Bills were not counting on making a coaching change, but they had to find someone when Doug Marrone exercised an opt-out clause in his contract that kicked in if the team was sold during the 2014 season, which it was. Apparently Marrone was not going to stick around if the new owners didn’t unload the management personnel that he had clashed with, and he didn’t get his wish. And Ryan was left with the task of maintaining some of the continuity in the defense, which led the NFL in points allowed per drive, while at the same time kick-starting the offense. Will Manuel turn out to be another Geno? That is altogether possible, as he has had difficulties catching on to reading opposition defenses, no matter how much “studying” he does, just like Smith.

Ryan had pledged to the new owners that he would hire a top-flight offensive coordinator, an obvious response to criticisms that he has had a tendency to ignore that side of the football in the past. So he brought Greg Roman, who held the job in San Francisco until Jim Harbaugh left, on board. Roman was said to have the most extensive playbook in the NFL, but BetAnySports customers know that can be a double-edged sword, as if Manuel is going to be the quarterback, that could pose a number of different problems.

Ryan is going to handle the defense to a considerable extent, and that was naturally going to cause a conflict with Jim Schwartz, who did such a terrific job with the Bills’ stop unit. He doesn’t really run the same scheme as Ryan, and that hastened his departure. It also guarantees that there will be something of a transition period, although that shouldn’t be a tremendous impediment.

Ryan’s philosophy isn’t going to be all that much different than he had with the Jets – punch the opponent in the mouth, with a bruising running game and an aggressive defense. He’s got some people to do the “ground-and-pound” with, if running backs Fred Jackson, CJ Spiller and Bryce Brown are around and healthy. And he just recruited the controversial Richie Incognito, who has a reputation for a lot of things, one of which is his potent run blocking.

The Bills are on the verge of being a playoff team. They went 9-7 last year and could easily get there with a more efficient offense. Is there a next level they can get to?
