Jets Bringing Some Attitude Into “Snoopy Bowl” with Giants

    By Charles Jay

The New York Jets were aggressive last weekend to the point where it got almost ridiculous. But Rex Ryan kind of likes that attitude, and as this team has its “dress rehearsal” for the regular season, he probably wouldn’t mind a little rough stuff as they face off against the New York Giants in what has become known as the “Snoopy Bowl” at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Game time for NFL betting action is 7:30 PM ET.

The Jets have won both of their pre-season games. In the opener they defeated the Indianapolis Colts 13-10, and then last week they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals by a 25-17 score. As it turns out, there was a little payback involved, as the Jets remembered the 49-9 pasting they took at the hands of Cincinnati last season. And it caused more than a few hard feelings.

Football bettors who know anything about Ryan as a personality understand that this is the kind of “edge” he likes to see out of his team, so if they can cut down on the penalties they may have a little more success. Things often get a little contentious when these two New York-New Jersey teams get together, and sometimes there is controversy as well, like in last year’s encounter, when Mark Sanchez was inserted into the game in the fourth quarter, for apparently no reason at all, and suffered a shoulder injury which set him out for the entire season.

In the NFL betting odds that a been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Jets are the slight favorites:

    New York Jets -1.5
    New York Giants +1.5

    Over 43.5 Points -110
    Under 43.5 Points -110

The Jets committed seven personal fouls against the Bengals, and after Cincinnati went to its second-team offensive line, Ryan started sending his first-team defense on blitzes, down after down. They abused Cincinnati’s backup quarterback, Matt Scott, and all of this brought complaints from the Bengals’ offensive line coach, Paul Alexander. Of course, Ryan’s reaction was that he could care less.

BetAnySports customers can’t ignore, however, that the Jets are having some problems in pass defense. When Cincinnati’s starting quarterback, Andy Dalton, was in the game, he completed all eight of his passes for 144 yards. The cornerback position is thin right now for Ryan’s team. Kyle Wilson is struggling, and Dee Milliner and Dexter McDougle are out of this game with injuries. They will be counting on Dimitri Patterson, who just returned to practice, to pick up some of the slack.

Wide receiver is also a position where the Jets are going to be rather thin. Jalen Saunders, who was involved in a one-car accident that is still mysterious in that the Jets are talking about it in very vague terms, will be sitting out of this game. And fourth-round draft pick Shaq Evans out of UCLA has shoulder surgery and is lost for the entire season.

NFL bettors have also seen Ryan become very coy about who his starting quarterback for Week 1 of the regular season is going to be. He will not confirm Geno Smith as his man yet, despite the fact that he has started both pre-season games, will start this one, and has been with the #1 unit in almost all of the drills. Players have said they have no reason to believe that Michael Vick, who was signed to be the backup, would be ascending to first-team status anytime soon.

Just some more mind games from the mentor. Will he have some that will work on Friday?
