NCAA Tournament Finals Betting Preview – North Carolina Seeks BIG Edges Against Villanova
By Charles Jay
The North Carolina Tar Heels are different than a lot of college basketball teams, and certainly different from the Villanova Wildcats, their opponents in Monday night’s national championship game, in that they bring incredible size to the table. This is a team that might be the envy of many teams in the NBA, and they are going to try to use that size to get inside and muscle Villanova, which is coming off one of the great performances in NCAA Tournament history. Game time for this one is 9:20 PM ET at NRG Stadium in Houston, and BetAnySports customers will get the chance to continue placing wagers even after the game tips off, with real-time odds provided through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.
In the basketball betting odds for this championship game, the conclusion of March Madness, North Carolina is the favorite at BetAnySports:
North Carolina Tar Heels -2.5
Villanova Wildcats +2.5
Over 149.5 points -110
Under 149.5 points -110
The man who will try to do the most damage for the Tar Heels in the paint area is 6-10 forward Brice Johnson, a first-team All-American who can actually play either inside or on the perimeter. Of course he does his best work close to the basket, and has shot 61% from the field this season, averaging 10.5 rebounds along with 17 points. North Carolina had 50 points in the paint against Syracuse in the national semi-final, along with sixteen second chance points. They are seventh in the nation in offensive rebounds, and Johnson is one of the big reasons why. But he isn’t the only big man in the rotation, not by a longshot.
He will play alongside 6-9, 265-pound Kennedy Meeks, and together these guys are going to be a huge challenge for a Villanova team that starts 6-11 Daniel Ochefu at center, but has no one else in the starting lineup taller than 6-6. When you consider that also starting on the frontline is slender 6-8 Justin Jackson, who hits threes and has a lot of length on defense, this is going to be a tough nut for Villanova to crack.
When you get past Johnson, Meeks and Jackson, there is bulk on the bench, and coach Roy Williams, who is in his fifth national title game, will not hesitate to reach out for 6-9 Isaiah Hicks and 6-10, 260-pound Joel James. These guys are going to try to wear Villanova down, and they have the muscle to do it. What is also very difficult for a team who face North Carolina is that the Tar Heels can get it down the floor as well. They are not afraid of stepping up the pace, and indeed they have averaged 89 points per game in this tournament (83 overall for the season).
Because it’s not likely they will take a lot of three-point attempts, what Villanova has done best against opposing teams, which is defend on perimeter, might be mitigated to some extent. North Carolina brings two point guards onto the floor – Marcus Paige and Joel Berry – and they will do their best to penetrate and cause further chaos for Villanova’s inside defense. BetAnySports patrons must take note that this is a team that doesn’t beat itself a lot when handling the basketball, as UNC ranks third in the nation in assist-turnover ratio.
And they don’t fumble their chances at the free-throw line either, hitting on 75% of their attempts over the course of the season. So in a close game, in which they have the lead, they would be well-equipped.
They play defense as well; North Carolina has allowed only one opponent over the last 28 games to shoot as high as 45%, and that was Notre Dame, who hit 55% in the Elite Eight, en route to a double-digit defeat. The Tar Heels are on a 10-game winning streak, with all of those wins coming against teams that made the NCAA Tournament, and they have covered eight of their last nine. This is a machine running at full speed at the moment.
