After the incredible performance by the Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl, where they put an end to Florida State’s undefeated season and put 59 points on the board in the process of arousing victory, one has to wonder whether any team has a chance to beat this team at this point. Well, stepping up to the plate are the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are coming off an upset in the sugar ball against Alabama in which they rolled up over 500 yards against one of the nation’s best defenses.

These teams will battle it out for the national championship, concluding the first four-team playoff, with football betting action set to begin at 8:30 PM ET at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.

This is a matchup of spread offenses, and both of them are certainly familiar with moving at a fast pace. There is a but of difference in the way these teams have been fixed at the quarterback position. While Oregon has Marcus Mariota, the Heisman Trophy winner for 2014, the Buckeyes are on their third alternative behind center. But it is a tribute to coach Urban Meyer that he has been able to keep this offense going AND chalk up two VERY impressive wins with Cardale Jones taking the snaps.

In the college football betting odds that have been placed on the NCAA National Championship game at BetAnySports, the Ducks are favored:

    Oregon Ducks -6
    Ohio State Buckeyes +6

    Over 74 points -110
    Under 74 points -110

The thing that makes Oregon so very dangerous is the fact that they can take advantage of any mistake and put it into the end zone within about two minutes’ time. They don’t play a “no-huddle” offense like some teams do, where they stand around forever at the line of scrimmage making a play call. These guys are LIVELY; they want to get the ball snapped as soon as possible in order to keep the other team off-balance and tire them out. Urban Meyer has studied all of this extensively, even going so far as to visit Chip Kelly (the former Oregon coach) at Philadelphia Eagles training camp. You just know he had a game like this in mind. But it’s more than that; Ohio State has incorporated some of this into their own attack. They will vary the speed of their offense, depending on the situation.

There are a couple of potential problems in that for them. One is that Oregon is not going to be caught off-guard by very much Ohio State does from that perspective. Another is that this is, after all, Jones’ third start in the college ranks. As most BetAnySports customers are well aware, Jones got the QB job after a season-ending injury to JT Barrett, who himself assumed control when Braxton Miller hurt his shoulder before the season started. Miller had been the Big Ten’s two-time offensive player of the year, and Barrett grew into the position to the point where he was being discussed as a genuine Heisman possibility. With the success Jones has had in throwing for 500 yards over two games and leading a 59-0 win over Wisconsin (Big Ten title game) and a 42-35 victory over Alabama (Sugar Bowl), college football bettors have to be wondering whether this isn’t just a case of “plug and play.”

It might well be. Meyer was a great proponent of the spread option, where he gained a lot of notoriety at Utah, which went undefeated with a guy named Alex Smith at quarterback (yes, the Alex Smith who was later taken #1 in the NFL Draft). Then there were two national titles at Florida, the second of which was stewarded by a guy named Tim Tebow. But now he needs for someone with very little collegiate experience to keep pace with an Oregon attack that is led by a quarterback who threw 40 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

It will be a tall task.
