Mississippi State Feels It’s Ready For Breakthrough Against LSU

    By Charles Jay

The LSU Tigers have won fourteen straight meetings against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. But the guys from Starkville think they may have come far enough to break that streak. A golden opportunity to do that may come on Saturday night (7 PM ET), as these squads clash in NCAA football betting action at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.

MSU is 3-0, but has not broken into the national rankings as of yet. That is probably because voters are taking a “wait and see” attitude, as the Bulldogs have rolled over Southern Miss, UAB and South Alabama, none of which is a world-beater. But everybody knows they have been making progress under Dan Mullen, who was Tim Tebow’s tutor at Florida.

LSU made a dramatic comeback to beat Wisconsin in the season opener, rebounding from a double-digit deficit to capture a 28-24 victory. Since then, the bayou Bengalis have not allowed a point, scoring wins over Sam Houston State (56-0) and Louisiana-Monroe (31-0). They are currently ranked #8 in the country in both major polls.

In the NCAA football betting lines on this game as they have been posted at BetAnySports, the Tigers are the home favorites:

    LSU Tigers -9
    Mississippi State Bulldogs +9

    Over 50 Points -110
    Under 50 Points -110

Louisiana-Monroe is not a bad team – after all, they did score a win over an ACC team, Wake Forest, in their opening game. That’s why it is impressive that LSU held that team to just 93 total yards and six first downs in last week’s game.

There are some dangerous people on the other side of the ball as well. One of them is Travin Dural, who is averaging close to 31 yards per reception. But then, it is really no surprise that LSU, which sent Odell Beckham to the NFL as a first-round draft pick and Jarvis Landry in the second, has produced another big-play wideout. And BetAnySports patrons would have to go a long way to find a tandem of freshman running backs like Leonard Fournette and Darrel Williams.

But if there is anything that might hold this offense back, it is that quarterback Anthony Jennings is still a work in progress. He’s nimble, but has completed just 52% of his passes. There is no problem in that regard as far as Mississippi State’s signal-caller is concerned. Dak Prescott makes the Bulldogs’ attack go; he was this team’s leading rusher last season, and he even caught a touchdown pass against South Alabama last time out.

BetAnySports customers may not have a proper barometer for what MSU, which destroyed Rice in last year’s Liberty Bowl, can do on the defensive side, but the numbers so far aren’t bad at all, as they have permitted just 2.3 yards per rushing attempt.

For those who are interested in NCAA football betting trends, the Bulldogs have covered five of their last six games away from home. But the last time they were in Baton Rouge they went as the #22 team in the country and were slapped down to the tune of 37-17. In last season’s matchup, LSU pushed their series winning streak to fourteen with a 59-26 romp in Starkville.
