    There are people from the Irving “camp” (i.e., his father and his agent) perhaps were not crazy about the way Cleveland was handling his knee injury. That was the rationale behind taking a trip a couple of weeks ago to Florida to meet up with Dr. James Andrews, the renowned orthopedic surgeon, in order to get an “independent” opinion.

    The team unquestionably wanted him to play, but there were potentially long-term complications that could cause. Well, as it turns out, Irving played 44 minutes of inspired basketball in Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors, scoring 23 points, with seven rebounds and a couple of block shots for good measure, including one against Steph Curry in the waning moments that actually gave Cleveland an opportunity to win the game in regulation time. But Irving paid the price. With two minutes left in the overtime session, he collapsed under what was later diagnosed to be a fractured kneecap, and so further steps in his career are under question.

Of course, that “plays” better because if it is non-contact, it brings up the question as to whether his tendinitis may have contributed to the injury and whether good judgment was exercised on the part of the Cavs. Blatt denied one thing had to do with the other.

    “You know, that’s a doctor’s question, but in my opinion, absolutely not,” Blatt said. “It has nothing to do with it.”

    Blatt also explained that he was not placing any restrictions upon Irving in terms of how many minutes he was going to play in Game 1.
