Jets vs Patriots December 24th, 2016 – Week 16 NFL Betting Preview

  • Updated: December 22, 2016
  • Whatever happens to the New York Jets in the future, it’s a pretty good bet that Ryan Fitzpatrick will not be a part of it. There was some expectation earlier in the week that Fitzpatrick might get the start at QB against the New England Patriots on Saturday, as Bryce Petty, who is being given a chance to show what he can do as a starting quarterback, suffered a chest injury on a particularly vicious hit against the Miami Dolphins last week. But Petty has been ruled okay to play, so he will make another start against the best team in the AFC, which has just wrapped up its eight consecutive East division title. The game begins at 1 PM Eastern time at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, and as CBS will televise it regionally, BetAnySports customers have the opportunity to place their wagers while it is in progress, using the vast resources provided by Live Betting Ultra.

Jets vs Patriots – CJ’s Take:

Petty, who had previously started games against the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, threw two interceptions against Miami and then turned the ball over a third time on a fumble. So the injury he suffered as he got hit simultaneously by two Dolphin defenders was kind of a “mercy killing.” Fitzpatrick came in and mopped up, throwing an interception in the process, and the result was a horrific 34-13 loss in a stadium that was hardly filled. Is Todd Bowles’ job in jeopardy? Probably not, but there is no question that the Jets have to figure out their quarterback situation at some point before the draft.

The Patriots were facing one of the toughest defenses in the league last week, and Tom Brady had only 177 passing yards, but New England’s defensive unit didn’t allow Denver’s struggling offense to gain much momentum in the 16-3 victory at Mile High. One particular standout was running back Dion Lewis, primarily known as a guy who can catch passes out of the backfield, who ran for 95 yards on 18 carries.

So what can the Jets do in this game? Well, they have to be at least a little encouraged about the play of Bilal Powell, who may have snatched the starting tailback job away from Matt Forte, who has been dealing with some injuries. Powell had 145 yards on the ground against San Francisco two weeks ago, and he added 84 yards to that, along with 78 yards in receptions, against Miami. So it is conceivable that the young quarterback could at least get a little support.

Let’s also not forget that Teddy likes to throw the ball to Robby Anderson, who has averaged 14.3 yards per catch. Brandon Marshall, who had some rapport with Fitzpatrick, was targeted 11 times last week and caught only one pass. So there might be some turnover at the wide receiver spot as well. The Jets have been horrific in the red zone, and that has partially been a result of Eric Decker’s injury, and they have converted only 38% of their third-down opportunities.
