Dolphins vs Patriots Odds – CJ’s Take

The Dolphins were the subject of a guessing game this year because they were bringing back Ryan Tannehill from the injury that sidelined him through the entirety of last season. But so far, so good; Tannehill is a 73% passer at the moment, with 8.3 yards per attempt. Those of the kinds of numbers they can get you to the Pro Bowl. Of course, the question is whether he can sustain it.

It was going to be an uphill battle without some of the team’s starters who were jettisoned in the off-season, including wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who led the NFL in receptions last year. But we see that Kenny Stills is averaging a little over 20 yards on his nine catches, with three touchdowns in three games. And the Dolphins had an unlikely hero last week in another wideout, Albert Wilson, who not only threw a touchdown pass, but also went 74 yards for a TD with a forward pitch from Tannehill.

In Week 2, the Patriots faced a fired-up Jacksonville team, itching for some payback from last year’s AFC championship contest. And they lost the game 31-20, as Blake Bortles had a big day in the absence of running back Leonard Fournette. There was absolutely no excuse for what happened with New England last Sunday night, as they looked lifeless in losing a 26-10 decision to the Detroit Lions and their former defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia, who is now head coach in the Motor City. New England had only 12 first downs and converted just two out of nine third-down opportunities. Tom Brady had an awful day, completing 14 of 26 for 133 yards, and the Patriots had only 209 total yards, which is unheard of for them. So clearly they need either some help or a big bounce-back effort here.

Perhaps they can count on both. We may have told you last week that New England went into that Detroit game with a 25-7 ATS record following a straight-up loss. Well, you can make that 25-8 now, but it’s still outstanding. And it looks like Josh Gordon, the speedster who was signed after Cleveland cut him, is going to make his New England debut. The probably have a package of plays he can work with, but if he’s on the field, he can make an impact.

Also, the Dolphins have not had a lot of success going to Foxborough, dropping the last six against the number and the last nine straight-up. And truth be told, they had kind of an advantage in their schedule, as they faced Tennessee in a game in which Marcus Mariota and starting left tackle Taylor Lewan were knocked out of action for the Titans, then encountered the Jets with Sam Darnold making only his second NFL start, and last week beat a Raiders team that is suddenly making a habit of blowing second-half leads. So we are willing to lay the points with the Patriots in this one.
