Clemson Will Encounter Plenty of Resistance From Alabama “D”

As we look at the respective performances of the Alabama Crimson Tide and Clemson Tigers in the two semi-final games that constituted the four-team College Football Playoff, casual observers and football experts alike had to be impressed by the performances of both winners. But somehow, there was something other-worldly about what Alabama did in its Cotton Bowl game against Michigan State. They took a team that had manhandled Ohio State not too long before and turned it into a creampuff, completely shutting down one of the top NFL quarterback prospects and turning the game into a “laugher.” So it’s time for the title game, which is scheduled for 8:30 PM ET on Monday night at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. It is televised live on ESPN, and while BetAnySports customers are watching it, they can also place wagers while the game is in progress, using the state-of-the-art software included with Live Betting Extra.

In the reduced juice College Football Playoff title game odds posted on this game at BetAnySports, Alabama is the clear favorite:
Alabama Crimson Tide -6.5 (-110)
Clemson Tigers +6.5 (+100)
Over 50.5 points -105
Under 50.5 points -105
Clemson is 14-0, and the only unbeaten team left in major college football. Alabama is 13-1 straight-up and 8-6 against the football pointspread. And they also have the advantage of being led by a guy who has been there before, many times. Nick Saban has already won four national titles, three of which were in Tuscaloosa (the previous one was in LSU). So he knows the drill, so to speak. This team has come down the stretch playing a vice-like brand of defensive football, allowing just 40 points over the last five games, three of which have come against nationally-ranked opponents. In the last two games combined, they have allowed only 44 net rushing yards. And so, needless to say, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and his teammates have their work cut out for them.
What opponents have been discovering is that aside from a punishing ground attack, led by Derrick Henry, the Heisman Trophy winner, Alabama also has the capacity to move the ball through the air. Jake Coker looked like a poised veteran against Michigan State, completing 25 out of 30 passes, connecting on a number of big plays to the likes of Calvin Ridley, the leading receiver. No matter what the stats look like, the Crimson Tide is always going to have pro prospects at the wide receiver position.
The presence of Henry, who is now over 2000 yards for the season, prevents opposing defenses from overloading themselves in the secondary. So you could see some more quick strikes by Coker. BetAnySports patrons should also keep in mind that Lane Kiffin is the offensive coordinator for ‘Bama, and love him or hate him, there is little argument that he is very effective.

But let’s get back to the defense for moment. If you take a look at the game-by-game statistics, you’ll see that Clemson has had 500 yards or more of total offense for 10 straight games. You will also see, if you look at Alabama’s stats, that they have allowed a total of 680 yards over the last three games, and they didn’t come against weak sisters either – Auburn, Florida, Michigan State. With 50 sacks, they have the kind of athleticism on the defensive front that can keep Watson off-balance. Of course, their challenge is to somehow keep him contained; the Clemson quarterback has over 1000 rushing yards.
This may be where Clemson misses freshman receiver Deon Cain, who averaged 17.1 yards per catch but was suspended before the Orange Bowl; a suspension that is effective for this game as well. At least he was someone who could have helped Watson stretch the field a bit. The Tigers may not have that kind of guy, and it could turn out to be they handicap that makes the difference.
