Red-Hot Chiefs Give Pats Something to Worry About

The Kansas City Chiefs have the longest current winning streak in the NFL right now, having emerged victorious in 11 straight games. And they looked extremely impressive in their first-round playoff game, shutting out the Houston Texans. Can their “express” roll through Foxborough on Saturday? They will have formidable opposition in front of them, as the New England Patriots have a ton of playoff experience and oppose them in this 4:35 PM ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium. Even after the opening whistle has blown, BetAnySports customers can be involved in the NFL playoff betting action, as they challenge the odds in real time through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.

In the NFL playoff betting odds posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, with reduced juice attached, the Patriots are favored:
New England Patriots -5 (-103)
Kansas City Chiefs +5 (-107)
Over 42 points -105
Under 42 points -105
Kansas City (12-5 straight-up, 9-8 ATS) benefited from five Houston turnovers, including four interceptions on the part of quarterback Brian Hoyer, and they got a 106-yard kickoff return from Knile Davis to start the game, essentially putting the Texans behind the eight-ball right away. They gave up only 226 yards in what was an outstanding defensive performance, and they extended their turnover margin to +18 on the season. But they did not come away unscathed; wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who caught 87 passes, has a high ankle sprain and is questionable for Saturday’s game.

New England (12-4 straight-up, 7-7-2 ATS) is dangerous because they have their most important wide receiver back in the lineup. Julian Edelman has been out since the middle of November, but it looks like he’s going to see action here. That almost automatically makes Tom Brady a more efficient passer.
The Chiefs have had quite a run after getting off to a 1-5 start. In fact, they are only the second team in NFL history since the merger to reach the playoffs after losing five of their first six games. Along the way, they beat the likes of Pittsburgh and Denver, but both of those teams had to rely on backup quarterbacks. Houston had been gaining confidence in Hoyer and he was completely shut down by the Kansas City defense, which now has 26 interceptions on the season. The Chiefs have also allowed just three rushing touchdowns in their last 13 games. That is outstanding.
Alex Smith may not be spectacular, but he threw only seven interceptions, and he and Brady have the least pick offs among starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Smith has been very efficient at playoff time, with 10 touchdown passes and only one interception in four post-season starts.
BetAnySports patrons will not only keep an eye on Maclin, who caught eight touchdown passes this season, but also pass rusher Justin Houston, who is still slowed a bit by his knee injury. Sebastian Vollmer is going to return to action at left tackle for the Patriots, so the Chiefs (47 sacks) may have a harder time getting to Brady than usual.
This is a stop unit that allowed only 33% success on third down, and no one has scored more than 22 points against them since the fourth game of the season. Their pass defense has to all pros – safety Eric Berry and corner Marcus Peters, a rookie – and they have permitted only 6.1 yards per passing attempt and 57.5% completions. However, the defense has also allowed opponents to score touchdowns in the red zone 60% of the time, and that ranks only 23rd in the league. New England has lots of options when they get down inside the 20 yard line, and they are second in the league in points per red zone appearance.
A lot of people will remember that Kansas City walloped New England 41-14 last season at Arrowhead Stadium. That shellacking was the turning point in the Patriots’ season, and you’ve got to believe there is at least a little revenge on their minds.
