Could it possibly bet any worse for the San Diego Chargers right now? With them, no lead is safe – no lead THEY have, that is. They have now lost three times when they have held the advantage in the fourth quarter, and honestly, they have figured out very creative ways to blow it. Now, on Sunday, they go up against a revived Oakland Raiders team in a game that will begin at 4:25 PM ET at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum. Chargers vs Raiders – CJ’s Take:
Chargers’ coach Mike McCoy was obviously not happy with last week’s results, in which is team committed two fumbles in the final period, allowing the New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees (making a homecoming of sorts) to score a pair of touchdowns, turning a 13-point lead into a one-point loss. So these guys really need to get their act together.
As far as the Raiders are concerned, they were able to cover their sixth straight game on the road, coming from behind to defeat the Baltimore Ravens 28-27. While the Chargers are figuring out a way to lose games, Oakland is pulling rabbits out of a hat to win them. And as a result, they are 3-1 and well on their way to the filling the prophecy on the part of many NFL observers who thought they might be a contender for the division title.
McCoy says he’s not particularly worried about his job, although he obviously should be. This can’t make the ownership very happy, and offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt could probably come and fill in, inasmuch as he has previous head-coaching experience with Arizona (with a Super Bowl under his belt) and Tennessee. San Diego has lost 15 of its last 20 games, and none of this non-success is going to help them any when it comes to voting on the referendum next month that would create some taxpayer money for new stadium – considered essential if this team is going to stay in town and not bolt (pardon the pun) for Los Angeles.
Melvin Gordon, who was supposed to supply some real spark in the backfield after disappointing rookie season, has averaged only 3.2 yards per carry and had one of those fumbles that led to a New Orleans touchdown. Is he going backwards? We notice that Philip Rivers does okay improvising with his offensive unit; last week he reached Dontrelle Inman seven times for 120 yards. As BetAnySports customers are probably aware, San Diego must go the rest of the season without top receiver Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead, a dual threat out of the backfield. Tight endAntonio Gates has also had very limited playing time.
The Charger defense allowed Brees to convert 11 out of his 18 third-down opportunities last week, and right now they are 27th in the NFL in terms of yards allowed on a per-drive basis. Opponents have averaged 5.1 yards per carry against them, but can San Diego do anything to exploit that?
Next up:
- The Chargers host the Broncos Thursday, October 13th
- The Raiders host the Chiefs Sunday, October 16th
