Belmont Stakes Odds – A Quick Tour of the Field
By Charles Jay
Well, you can’t say that American Pharoah has gotten lucky in winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes; after all, he was not in the most favorable starting position in either race. In the Derby, he started from the #18 chute, which means that he had to cross a lot of ground and in front of many horses to boot. In the Preakness, he had the rail, which was something his connections dreaded. But now, Pharoah is in the #5 post position as he goes after the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes, scheduled for approximately 6:50 PM ET at Belmont Park in New York.
BetAnySports customers have seen two tremendous trips from the Bob Baffert horse, but they also know that it is a very grueling road to get to the Triple Crown, which is why there have been 12 different horses since Affirmed last did it that have failed, not to mention one (I’ll Have Another) who was scratched on the day of the race. It is just difficult to win three races against world-class three-year-olds in a period of five weeks, and there are some fresh horses indeed coming after the favorite in this one.
One of them is Mubtaahij, the Irish-bred who finished eighth in the Derby and will have the leading rider in New York this year, Irad Ortiz, aboard. This horse has the rail, which may or may not be a disadvantage.
Belmont Stakes Odds:
Let’s take a look at all the contenders, with post position and odds, as they are established at BetAnySports:
1 – Mubtaahij +1250
2 – Tale of Verve +2200
3 – Madefromlucky +1500
4 – Frammento +4500
5 – American Pharoah -130
6 – Frosted +525
7 – Keen Ice +2300
8 – Materiality +625
The #2, Tale of Verve, did not break maiden until his seventh race, but surprised a lot of people by coming from way back to place second in the Preakness. This is a horse who had less than $100,000 and earnings, but now everyone is aware of him.
The #3, Madefromlucky, is a Todd Pletcher horse who was soundly beaten by the Pharoah in the Arkansas Derby, and skipped both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, instead racing in the Peter Pan, where he won. That’s where Totalist got his preparation to beat California Chrome, who was going after the Triple Crown in the Belmont last year.
The #4, Frammento (+4500 at BetAnySports), was third in the Fountain of Youth stakes at Gulfstream, then drew into the Kentucky Derby because of scratches and did not make much noise. The #6, Frosted, is the second favorite and is given a big chance for the upset, based on closing speed. Frosted won the Wood Memorial and in the Kentucky Derby finished just three lengths behind American Pharoah.
Keen Ice is the son of Curlin, an outstanding horse who won the 2007 Preakness and Breeders’ Cup Classic, and also lost by just a head in the Belmont Stakes. Curlin is also the sire of a former Belmont winner, Palace Malice, and there is some late kick in this particular contender, although the Beyer Speed Figures are not all that impressive.
Finally, starting out of the #8 position is Materiality (+625 at BetAnySports), also trained by Todd Pletcher, who was strategically left out of the Preakness in order to rest up for this one. Materiality has the highest Beyer Speed Figure at of any worse in this race, racking up a 110 in the Florida Derby. The Kentucky Derby was only his fourth start, and having to work from behind horses, underachieved and finished sixth. But that was in a crowd, and the same conditions won’t exist here. The sire is Afleet Alex, who made a joke of this field down the stretch in the 2005 Belmont. So with breeding counts for something, this is one horse starting from the outside, with a lot of speed, who has it!
