Who were the big winners during the NBA’s trade period? Well, that is something that might be hard to decipher, inasmuch as this season it was more of a NON-trade period. Do some teams win by not making moves? That can be argued by BetAnySports customers, for certain.
Maybe one example was the Atlanta Hawks, who were reportedly shopping two of their starters. Power forward Al Horford had been named to the Eastern Conference All-Star squad in place of Chris Bosh, and he is the kind of front court presence a lot of teams can use if they are making a playoff push. With his pending free agency (and unrestricted at that), there was tremendous speculation that Horford might be on his way to another team; perhaps one that was going to make a move of its own to open up a spot for a center of power forward. The Boston Celtics needed some help there, although that couldn’t have been a likely scenario, since that is a possible post-season opponent for the Hawks.
Jeff Teague was someone else purportedly on the move, and there are several teams who can use a point guard of his caliber. One of those is the Utah Jazz, which had really hoped to have a developing Dante Exum available (the second-year man has been out all season with an injury) but have plodded along with Trey Burke, who they have not been 100% satisfied with. Even Kyle Korver was involved in the trade rumors; he is a good enough outside shooter to be a key figure for a lot of teams off the bench.

But nothing really happened for the Hawks, except to trade second-line guard Shelvin Mack, who went off to the Jazz to be reunited with former Butler teammate Gordon Hayward, and acquire Kirk Hinrich, who could be valuable off the bench. What occurs here as a result is the Hawks, who stood at 31-25 as of Saturday morning – in a virtual tie with the Miami Heat for the fourth playoff spot in the East – will put their best foot forward in an attempt to get back to the East finals. They may be too far back to catch second-place Toronto, but they can definitely get to the #3 seed when all is said and done.
The Houston Rockets didn’t really do a lot either, and the jury is still out as to whether this is going to be a good thing for them. That’s what happens when you have Dwight Howard around, and as BetAnySports patrons are well aware, he has not exactly made for a good match with mega-scorer James Harden from the start, nor is he a promoter of harmony in general. Either of these guys was considered a candidate to be moved, although if the Rockets could have gotten something satisfactory for Howard, who is going to be entering free agency, they may have jumped.
So they didn’t trade a star, but Houston let go of a couple of role players as they sent Donatas Motiejunas and Marcus Thornton to the Detroit Pistons and got a first-round pick (protected for Detroit if it is one of the top eight) in return. Houston is currently in a battle with the Portland Trail Blazers, Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz for the final three playoff spots in the West, and for the moment, they became a thinner roster. However, their trade was voided when Motiejunas faild his physical, opening up a precarious can of worms which required the Rockets, who had acquired center Joel Anthony in the deal and then shipped him off to Philadelphia, to return him to Detroit.

Detroit might still qualify as a trade deadline “winner” of sorts, as they acquired standout forward Tobias Harris from Orlando, although they had to give up Brandon Jennings and Ersan Ilyasova in the process.
Addition by subtraction? Maybe that is represented by the lowly Phoenix Suns (third worst record in the NBA), who parted ways with Markieff Morris, who was allegedly despondent about seeing his twin brother Marcus traded to Detroit in the off-season and became a whole bunch of trouble, both in plain sight and behind the scenes. The Suns sent him to the Washington Wizards, so he’s a problem for the nation’s capital at this point.
