It is not an exaggeration to say that the eyes of baseball bettors around the world were fixed squarely on Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez on Thursday afternoon, as he made his long-awaiting comeback from Tommy John surgery. There were plenty of questions that have be answered, namely, how much will he have in this first start? How will manager Dan Jennings handle the situation? How far will he allow him to go?

BetAnySports customers were well aware of what he had before he went down with his elbow injury. As a 20-year-old he came as a shocker, as after having played in Single-A ball the previous season he posted a 2.19 ERA and more than a strikeout an inning, winning the Rookie of the Year award. Last season he looked as if he might even be more dominant, fanning 70 batters in his first 51-2/3 innings, but he shelved with a tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, and he has sat out for thirteen months.

The opposition on Thursday was the San Francisco Giants, the defending World Series champs who also have one of the best road records in the major leagues. So he was not re-entering the fray with a piece of cake.

But it indeed seemed that way, as Fernandez used his arm, and his bat, to the Marlins to a victory that gave them two out of three against a likely playoff team – something that is a rarity of sorts for this club that is well under the .500 mark and out of the race, unless they catch lightning in a bottle in a hurry.

Of course, the BetAnySports crowd knows that is not a probability since Giancarlo Stanton, the man who not only led the majors in homers and RBI’s but also became synonymous with tape-measure round-trippers, went down with a wrist injury. That is obviously going to affect this team’s offensive production in the long run.

But Fernandez made sure there wasn’t going to be a power shortage, at least on this particular day. The .197 career hitter blasted a home run to spark the 5-4 victory. He was not untouchable on the mound, allowing two runs in the first inning, but he was outstanding the rest of the way, leaving after six innings and three runs, with six strikeouts.

The important thing thing for baseball betting customers to consider here is not necessarily how the comeback of Fernandez is going to affect the Marlins’ playoff chances, because, after all, when you are ten games back in the division race and 9.5 games out of the wild card, as they were even after the win over Giants, that is not a major topic of discussion. But he can at least bring back some excitement to the Miami fan base, which is small (the Marlins are fourth from the bottom in MLB attendance) but was severely deflated over the loss (for four to six weeks) of Stanton.

And of course, those that enjoy major league baseball betting are eagerly anticipating Fernandez’s next outing and what he might be able to do. He’s already faced the best; let’s see what he can do against the rest.
