It is anticipated that those who will be watching Saturday night’s Alamo Bowl between the Oregon Ducks and the TCU Horned Frogs will not have a lot of time to go to the refrigerator, so to speak. Oregon, of course, reached the national championship game last season and lost to Ohio State. They graduated Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota and replaced him with Vernon Adams, who was a two-time runner-up for the Walter Payton Award, emblematic of the top player at the FCS level of college football. He has had to deal with injuries for much of the season, but when he is healthy, the Oregon offense is humming.

TCU has had some injury problems with its own quarterback. Trevone Boykin was expected to be one of the top two or three Heisman Trophy contenders this season, but he has had ankle problems, and this team has been handicapped by the loss of a lot of defensive starters. Going into this contest, TCU is 10-2 straight-up and 6-6 against the football pointspread. Oregon is 9-3 straight-up and 7-5 ATS.

Adams’ first start came against Eastern Washington, the school he left to come to Oregon as a graduate student. He broke his finger in that game and was hampered for quite a while. But what he has done is commendable, with 25 touchdown passes and only six interceptions. He has been aided by one of the better running backs in the country. For some reason, Royce Freeman did not get a lot of consideration for the Heisman, but his numbers are outstanding, with 1706 yards and 6.6 yards per carry. As usual, Oregon operates out of the spread, and they are powerful on the ground, averaging 288 yards per game.

TCU was ranked right behind Ohio State at the season’s outset, and that was on the basis of returning 10 starters to the offense. They won their first eight games before taking it on the chin at the hands of Oklahoma State (49-29), despite having a 663-456 edge in yardage. They later lost at Oklahoma (30-29), in a game that may have decided the Big 12 champion.

The Horned Frogs have historically had a very stingy defense under Gary Patterson, but they just lost too many key players throughout the campaign. As a result, they allowed almost 400 yards per game.
