49ers vs Cardinals Odds – 2017 Week 4 NFL Betting Preview

  • Updated: September 30, 2017
  • Well, Brian Hoyer, the well-traveled quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, finally got the offense moving last time out, but the question is whether he can ignite coach Kyle Shanahan’s designs with any kind of consistency. On Sunday we may find out a little more about that, as the 0-3 Niners take the field against the Arizona Cardinals in a game that begins at 4:05 PM ET at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. It’s a Fox Network regional telecast, and BetAnySports customers can watch it and place wagers the same time using the state-of-the-art software that is available through Live Betting Ultra.

Hoyer completed 23 out of 37 passes for 332 yards against Los Angeles Rams, helping to key a comeback in the fourth quarter in which San Francisco scored 19 points and even covered the pointspread, losing 41-39. There are obviously some encouraging signs, including 84 yards rushing into touchdowns from Carlos Hyde, and Pierre Garcon caught seven passes for 142 yards. And it took a missed two-point conversion at the end the to prevent the 49ers and taking the game into overtime. After failing to score a touchdown for the first two games, Bay Area fans have to feel very good about this effort, in which the Niners scored five touchdowns.

So the question is where do they go from here? They know they have a guy who can run between the tackles in Hyde, but he is not all that effective catching passes. And San Francisco’s performance in the first two games was so poor on offense that they are still only converting 31.7% of their third-down opportunities.

The Cardinals, at 1-2, are going through their own problems. For their only victory, they had to go to overtime with an Indianapolis Colts team that is playing without quarterback Andrew Luck. Of course, part of the problem with Arizona is that they are missing their tremendous dual-purpose running back, David Johnson, who has had to undergo wrist surgery. In his place, they have tried to use a “committee” approach, but no one has run the ball with any consistency, and needless to say Carson Palmer does not have that great outlet out of the backfield. This changes the whole offense, although it is worth noting that Arizona still has some pretty good metrics, in that they have an advantage in first downs over their opponents (63-52), as well as nearly 42% success on third down.

Part of that, as BetAnySports patrons are aware, is a solid receiving corps, where Larry Fitzgerald looks like a guy who is never going to get old. Fitzgerald had 13 receptions for 149 yards against the Dallas Cowboys last week, even in a 28-17 defeat. He helped Palmer achieve 325 yards through the air in a week in which he had to undergo criticism from head coach Bruce Arians, who later explained that Palmer knows how to handle that kind of thing like a pro. Fitzgerald had 213 yards receiving in two meetings against the 49ers last season, but there will be other pass-catchers stretching the field, including Jaron Brown and JJ Nelson, both of whom are averaging more than 16 yards per catch.

It is hard to imagine Hoyer wreaking much havoc against the Arizona secondary, when Patrick Peterson, a legitimate shutdown cornerback, can take care of their top receiver on any given down. So can Hoyer have some success in short range? We will find out about that.
