Bills vs Jets January 1st, 2017 – Week 17 NFL Betting Preview
Bills Under New Leadership in Season Finale
Well, everybody knows by now that the Buffalo Bills are going through some changes, and who knows what kind of a football team they are going to look like next year. But at least there is some of the residue of the Rex Ryan “era” still around now, and that should be able to take care of business against the New York Jets in the 2016 season finale. These teams will get together on Sunday at 1 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, and while CBS televises it, BetAnySports customers can place their wagers in real time using the tremendous technology available from Live Betting Ultra.

Bills vs Jets – CJ’s Take:
Ryan failed to get the Bills to the postseason in either of the two years he was at the helm. And ownership lost their patience with him. He had apparently lost the locker room, and could not get along with general manager Doug Whaley, and with his personality, which could be abrasive at times, it just didn’t work out anymore. But the Bills were able to establish some things while he was in place, including the league’s best rushing attack, accounting for 171 yards a game and a robust 5.5 yards per carry. Tyrod Taylor was a part of that, as the quarterback had rushed for 580 yards, but he’ll be stepping aside here, in favor of EJ Manuel, who was the first round draft pick a few years ago but was benched during the reign of Doug Marone.
The Bills also learned how to get after the quarterback once again, as they boasted 38 sacks. A couple of seasons ago they were second in the NFL in this category, when Jim Schwartz was the defensive coordinator, but they slumped last year, as defenders had a hard time learning Ryan’s scheme. So there is at least something to build on.
For the Jets, it all kind of looks like rubble right now. They brought quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick aboard on a one-year deal, hoping that he could help them make the playoffs, something they narrowly missed last year. But things came apart very early; in fact, they disintegrated right after a win over Buffalo in the second week of the season. Fitzpatrick through six interceptions against Kansas City, and that was all downhill from there. He now has 17 picks for the season, and gave way to Bryce Petty, a second-year pro out of Baylor. But then Petty suffered a shoulder injury, leaving things back in the hands of Fitzpatrick.
The Jets drafted Christian Hackenberg in the second round, but interestingly enough, they still do not consider him to be ready for game action. So he will be Fitzpatrick’s backup, with no real plans to play. That is the decision, apparently, of both Todd Bowles, the head coach, and team management. It shows you what they think of the progress of the rookie out of Penn State. But as they move forward, one bright spot has been Bilal Powell, who has averaged 5.5 yards per carry in limited duty, although he has stepped up considerably in recent games, as Matt Forte was injured. Also, Robby Anderson, an undrafted rookie out of Temple, has caught 38 passes for 544 yards, although it is obvious that the team misses Eric Decker. In fact, they went from being one of the best red zone teams in the league to one of the worst.
BetAnySports patrons know that Taylor is sitting out this one, not because he is injured, but because the team did not want to risk him getting hurt. When it comes time for him to take a physical in March, if he is determined to be disabled, the Bills will be liable for a $27.5 million injury penalty. And that’s the way it is when you have a team that is out of the playoff picture. Anthony Lynn, who had earlier in the season been elevated from his position as running backs coach to offensive coordinator, has been given the head-coaching job on an interim basis for this game. Then, presumably, he will interview for the “permanent” position. Lynn has to be credited with bringing the Bills back to basics, as he re-emphasized the running game and simplified the playbook.
That means the main guy in the offense is Shady McCoy, the Pro Bowl running back who has 1257 yards and 13 touchdowns. But Buffalo cannot claim to be there productive in stopping other teams from running; they have allowed 4.6 yards per carry. And what a disappointment they sustained last week, getting 589 yards of offense, fighting back resiliently after going down early against the Miami Dolphins, but ultimately losing 34-31 in overtime. Ryan got fired, leaving his record in Buffalo at 15-16. Speculation has centered around a number of candidates, including the aforementioned Lynn and former New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin. The quarterback situation might also be up in the air when all is said and done, because they may not be completely comfortable with Taylor leading them next season.
