Wisconsin vs Penn State December 3rd, 2016 – Big Ten Championship Betting Preview

  • Updated: December 1, 2016
  • There is perhaps nothing stranger about this college football season then the fact that with all of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines, and the tremendous game they played last weekend, that neither team would be appearing in the Big Ten conference championship game. That’s right; the two teams battling it out for the chance to, at the very least, go to the Rose Bowl, are the Wisconsin Badgers and Penn State Nittany Lions, who will take the field at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday night. Game time is 8 PM ET, and BetAnySports customers, even after the opening kickoff, can stay involved in the action as they access the state-of-the-art software available through Live Betting Ultra.

Big Ten Championship – CJ’s Take:

So how did this happen? Well, Wisconsin is not in the same division as either Ohio State or Michigan, although they lost very tight games to both of them. Michigan lost twice in the division, and Penn State beat Ohio State. The Buckeyes could find themselves in the position where they can make it to the four-team college football playoff without having to win the Big Ten title. In fact, that is most likely going to happen.

Wisconsin, which is # 5 in the Coaches’ poll and 6th with the Associated Press, are also sixth in the Playoff Rankings, while Penn State (8th in both major polls) is #7 in the Playoff Rankings, which means that the winner could conceivably still wind up in the “Final Four,” although they made need an external break or two.

Penn State was slaughtered by Michigan (49-10), then went on a tear, winning eight straight games and covering the last seven. This included the 24-21 upset win over Ohio State. They have been potent offensively of late, averaging 46.4 points over their last five games. Under the no-nonsense head coach James Franklin, this is a team that is solid in a lot of areas, although perhaps non superlative in many. They are 20th in the nation in defense, which is their highest ranking in any statistical category. Maybe a not-so-secret weapon is placekicker Tyler Davis, who has made 20 of his 22 field goal attempts.

This is a game that might be impacted by a couple of injuries. Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, who was just named Big Ten offensive player of the year, injured his foot against Michigan State last week and had only 14 yards on the ground in that game. BetAnySports patrons who were wondering about his status might take a cue from Franklin, who says that he anticipates his offensive star (1219 yards, 17 TD’s) will be in the lineup, based on how Barkley tells him he feels.

Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook had a concussion against Minnesota which has placed his own status into question, but there was nothing awe-inspiring about his numbers, which show a 58% accuracy rate and a ratio of only eight touchdowns to seven INT’s. There is some opinion among Badger followers that the team might be in better hands with Bart Houston, who has been splitting time with Hornibrook over the last six games and has a per-attempt average that is a yard and a half better. Either way, Wisconsin is #1 nationally is possession time and #3 in scoring defense (allowing 13.7 ppg) and those numbers mean a lot here.
