    49ers vs Cardinals – CJ’s Take:

In the first meeting, San Francisco had its starting quarterback at the time, Blaine Gabbert, in the lineup, but the Cardinals were missing Carson Palmer who was out while going through the NFL’s concussion protocol. Drew Stanton filled in for him and completed only 11 out of 28 passes for 124 yards. Despite this, Arizona still won by a score of 33-21, as Gabbert threw a pair of interceptions. The Niners were able to move the chains with some effectiveness, racking up 25 first downs, but the offensive line gave up seven sacks.

They hope for higher level of mobility out of their quarterback spot this week as Colin Kaepernick has taken things under his control. Kaepernick, who has been the center of much controversy this season, had a very good day against the New Orleans Saints, with 398 yards passing, and he is obviously always a threat to run with the football. Palmer missed only that one game, but he has been sacked 24 times this season with only ten touchdown passes through seven starts.

If there is a very big difference between these teams, it is in the way they defend. San Francisco has allowed a 100-yard rusher in seven straight games, which is an NFL record. They have also allowed 5.3 yards per carry and 47 yards per game on the ground more than the next worst team in the NFL. And so all of a sudden, here comes David Johnson, who had 157 of his 706 rushing yards in that first encounter between these clubs. What can the Niners do to slow Johnson down? That is a very big dilemma for chip Kelly’s defensive coaching staff, because they are going to be without their best player, linebacker Novorro Bowman, for the rest of the season.

If they can’t pull a rabbit out of their hat, the Niners are going to risk a lot of fatigue on the defensive side of the football, because that unit has been on the field for 71.4 plays per game. BetAnySports patrons may have been impressed by this team’s 28-0 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the season opener, but since then they have lost seven straight games, allowing 30 points or more six times along the way.

Arizona has some injury problems to worry about; safety Tyrann Mathieu is out with a shoulder injury, and they will miss left tackle Jared Veldheer, who just had triceps surgery. Remember we mentioned all the sacks that Palmer has suffered, so protection might well be a problem.

On the Niners’ side, the critical personnel situation revolves around Carlos Hyde, who has a shoulder injury himself and will, by all accounts, be a gametime decision for Kelly to make. Of course, that is going to be dictated by the doctors, but he has been wearing the “no-contact” jersey in practice during the week. Arizona is, in terms of yards allowed, the best defense in the NFL, yielding only 297 yards per game. But their offense has gotten off to slow starts, with seven TOTAL first-quarter points. Maybe they can take advantage of mistakes on the part of the 49ers, who have committed 17 turnovers so far this season. How long will Chip Kelly last in the Bay Area?

    Next up for both teams:

    • San Francisco home to New England Sunday, November 20
    • Arizona at Minnesota Sunday, November 20
