2016 College Football Betting Preview – Week 1 LSU vs Wisconsin

Everybody knows that LSU is a team that is supremely talented, but at the same time, they went through a lull last season, suffering consecutive double-digit defeats to Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi, which put Les Miles’ job, seemingly, in jeopardy. But he comes back loaded with ammo this season, and of course, the star player is Leonard Fournette, who goes into his junior season as one of the Heisman Trophy favorites. Fournette gained 1953 yards and scored 22 touchdowns last season, and this team has a lot of backup at the running back spot.

Wisconsin, under coach Paul Chryst, who once played as a quarterback with the team, is coming off a 10-3 season, and they will be making a change at the quarterback spot. Joel Stave, who had just an 11-11 touchdown-to-interception ratio last season, has moved on to the Minnesota Vikings, and Bart Houston, a redshirt senior who has thrown 47 passes in his collegiate career, takes over.

One of the keys for Wisconsin in this game is to see Corey Clement complete his comeback. Clement, who averaged 8.2 yards per carry as a freshman and 6.5 yards as a sophomore, only had 221 yards total as a junior. He missed seven games, between a suspension and a sports hernia injury. But he has the ability to be a Heisman candidate himself. And he has four out of the five offensive linemen coming back.

Wisconsin was the second -ranked defense in the country last season, and they were so good that LSU poached their coordinator. That’s right – Dave Aranda is now the defensive coordinator at LSU, so there is going to be some familiarity on both sides here. Aranda did not leave the cupboard bare; five out of the seven people on the defensive front have returned, and BetAnySports patrons should remember that Fournette did not do a whole lot of business against Alabama, which had similar defensive credentials. Wisconsin gave up only 3.1 yards per carry last season, and we would expect them to be very rough at the point of attack again.

One potential handicap for LSU, despite a plethora of offensive weapons, is the quarterback. Brandon Harris is rather ordinary, completing just 54% of his passes last season, and it would appear a shame that he could not exploit a tremendous wide receiver duo like Malachi Dupre and Travon Dural as much as he possibly could. But otherwise, LSU has a load of talent coming back – eight starters on the offense and nine on the defense, and they have a veteran secondary of blue-chip athletes. Safety Jamal Adams will be on a lot of All-America lists by the time the season is over. So it is an uphill battle for Wisconsin to get some balance in the offense. Make note that the 3-4 alignment that Wisconsin used last year is being brought to Baton Rouge by Aranda.
