  • 2016 NFL Betting Futures Preview of the AFC West

Here are the odds to win the AFC West, as they have been posted at BetAnySports:

    • Kansas City Chiefs +183
    • Denver Broncos +198
    • Oakland Raiders +290
    • San Diego Chargers +675

2016 NFL Betting Futures – Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs (+183) did a lot of things solidly last season on the way to a playoff spot, and much of the same is likely to happen. Alex Smith will probably still try to cut down on turnovers by taking sacks, and he was dumped 45 times last season. At one of the tackle positions the Chiefs like to think they have upgraded with the acquisition of former Cleveland Brown Mitchell Schwartz. Picking up wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was a nice move, because at least he produced some touchdown catches. And the running backs were productive (namely Charcandrick West) even in the absence of Jamaal Charles. Only two teams in the NFL permitted fewer points than this defense, and safety Eric Berry made a heroic comeback from cancer. and there was a seven-interception season from rookie cornerback Marcus Peters, which was a pleasant surprise, after Peters experienced some off-the-field troubles in college.

2016 NFL Betting Futures – Denver Broncos

The Chiefs are favorites here over the defending champion Denver Broncos (+198 at BetAnySports) principally because Denver had to not only replace Peyton Manning, but also come up with an alternative for Brock Osweiler, who went off to Houston. They have brought in Mark Sanchez, who is middle-of-the-road at best, who we assume will keep the seat warm until first-round pick Paxton Lynch is ready. The consensus was that wide receivers Demariyus Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders were made a lot better due to Manning’s presence, so what will they be able to accomplish with Sanchez at the helm? Of course, it comes down to the defense, which may not be operating with tremendous field position. This stop unit was among the league’s best in a number of categories, and one of them was sacks (with 52), so it is certainly huge news that Von Miller, the Super Bowl MVP, is ready to go. But the losses of Malik Jackson and Danny Travathan will affect that defense.

2016 NFL Betting Futures – Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders (+290 to win the AFC West at BetAnySports) are making some strides, and they have made some definitive moves to upgrade the defense. The additions of linebacker Bruce Irvin, cornerback Sean Smith, and safeties Reggie Nelson and rookie Karl Joseph. What they really liked was the development of quarterback David Carr, who won a trip to the Pro Bowl (albeit as an injury replacement) for his efforts. Amani Cooper had a superb rookie year (72 receptions), and he does make for a dangerous combo with Michael Crabtree. Coach Jack Del Rio has a background in defense, of course, and that is why a lot of people are encouraged that this Raider team, which was 7-9 last year, could take the final step toward a post-season berth.

2016 NFL Betting Futures – San Diego Chargers

No one is looking for much out of the San Diego Chargers (+675 at BetAnySports) except maybe an eventual move to Los Angeles. Coach Mike McCoy would desperately love to be able to balance this offense, and that would require progress from running back Melvin Gordon, who did not score a rushing touchdown in his rookie season. Most likely there is still a huge burden on Philip Rivers, who was second in the NFL in passing yards in 2015, and if that is the case, it would be nice if they could remain healthy on the offensive line. That was not the case last year, when they seemingly had a different combination up front every week.
