    About a week ago, it looked like it might be smooth sailing for the Golden State Warriors in their pursuit of the all-time NBA record for most regular-season victories, but now they’re in a tough position, as they have to win each of their four remaining games to do so. Two of those games will come against the Memphis Grizzlies, and the other two take place against the San Antonio Spurs, who have been their closest pursuers in the conference race. They meet up on Thursday night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, and things will get underway at 10:35 PM ET on TNT.     This is a team that had won 54 straight regular-season contests at home, and with that they had set a record held by the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, who also won 72 games that year. And Golden State has a chance still to shatter that mark, but that task is a lot more difficult, as they have lost two of their last three games at the Oracle Arena. One of them came at the hands of the Boston Celtics, and then a couple of nights ago the Minnesota Timberwolves came into town and shocked the Warriors in overtime 124-117. Steve Kerr has been very mindful of the sloppy manner in which his team is handled the basketball, and that manifest itself in defeat on Tuesday night, as the Warriors coughed it up 24 times. That brings the total to 109 over the last six games, and it’s not likely there are going to repeat as NBA champions playing that way.

    This is a real concern against San Antonio, which is only 3.5 games behind them in the conference race. But that’s not necessarily the important thing to focus on, because all the Warriors really have to do is to win two of these final four games to clinch the West, or beat the Spurs on Thursday. We are looking forward into the playoffs, and frankly, the argument can be made that the Spurs are showing better form than the Warriors at the moment.

    It has been reported that the Warriors were highly motivated to shatter Chicago’s record, and you really can’t blame them. Obviously that dream is still alive, but Andrew Boguit, the center who is coming back to the lineup (along with Andre Iguodala, last year’s NBA Finals MVP) has said “In the grand scheme of things, it’s small potatoes.” This much would be true, if the primary goal is to repeat as world champions. It will be a disappointment, nonetheless, if Golden State fell short of its goal because it fell asleep at the wheel against a team like Minnesota.

    One guy who should repeat regardless is Steph Curry, who won last year’s Most Valuable Player award and is on his way to winning more hardware this season. Currently he leads the NBA in scoring, steals and three-pointers made, he is also second in the league in free-throw percentage. But they have been in a lot of closely-contested games lately, and have suffered four losses over the last month. One of those defeats came at the hands of San Antonio at the AT&T Arena on March 19. In that game, Curry was held to just 4-for-18 from the field, and Golden State scored a season-low in the 87-79 defeat.

    Maybe this is going to be a battle of tempo; Golden State is second in the league in the “Pace” category, while San Antonio is just 24th, indicating that the Spurs like to play more of a deliberate game. The Warriors have covered only three of their last 10 games, while San Antonio is 5-12 ATS over their last 17 contests. The last four meetings between these two squads have gone “under” the posted total.
