Syracuse vs North Carolina – NCAA Tournament Final Four Betting
Syracuse vs North Carolina – The Orange Need to Keep the Tarheels Outside
By Charles Jay
The Syracuse Orange went into the NCAA Tournament having lost five of their previous six games, and there were a lot of people who were skeptical about their credibility as an at-large entry. But they have indeed proven themselves to be worthy and then some, winning four games in advancing to the Final Four, where they can continue this unlikely sojourn with a victory against the North Carolina Tar Heels and a ticket to the NCAA national championship game. Can they get it done? Well, they will have to go against the only remaining #1 regional seed in the tournament. Game time is 8:45 PM ET at NRG Stadium in Houston, and BetAnySports customers will have the unique opportunity to continue wagering even after the opening tipoff, as they take advantage of what is available through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.
In the college basketball betting odds posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, Syracuse is catching a lot of points:
North Carolina Tar Heels -9.5
Syracuse Orange +9.5
Over 144.5 points -110
Under 144.5 points -110
Syracuse lost 13 times during the season, so critics were not without foundation. Jim Boeheim, the 71-year-old coach who had to sit out nine games in a suspension this season, was rather angry at those in the media who questioned his team’s credentials, and let them know after the opening game, where the Orange pounded Dayton 70-51. The last two victories have been particularly impressive, as they came against Gonzaga and Virginia, with this team going on tremendous runs in each of them to salt away victory.
Syracuse plays an interesting defensive scheme called the Matchup Zone, which combines aspects of both a zone and man-to-man defense. What they will try to do is make North Carolina shoot from the outside, and that is not the Tar Heels’ strength.
Syracuse held Dayton to just 32% shooting and then turned around and limited Middle Tennessee, which had beaten Michigan State, to just 30% from the field. They overcame a 16-point second-half deficit to defeat Virginia, and they did so by pressing on defense enforcing the Cavaliers to step up things offensively, which is not necessarily a strategy that is going to work against North Carolina, which likes an accelerated tempo to begin with.
But Boeheim, who is in his fifth Final Four, and won the 2003 title with Carmelo Anthony, is not a man who cannot adjust to different situations. But as BetAnySports patrons know, he may have to get better shooting at of his team than it has shown thus far. Syracuse has been below 40% from the field in three of the four tournament games it is played. That kind of marksmanship would make it difficult to trade points with North Carolina, unless the matchup zone is really flustering the Tar Heels.
Is there a chance that will happen? Sure, if they can pack up the inside and limit what Brice Johnson can do. Remember that North Carolina hit only 32% of its three-point attempts this season, so if they are forced to shoot over the zone, there could be some trouble for them. In two meetings this season, both won by the Tar Heels, North Carolina hit only nine of its 41 tries from beyond the arc.
