The Kansas City Chiefs had every reason to lose faith in themselves and their chances to make it to the post-season after the first six games of the campaign. They had gone 1-5 and had lost one of the best running backs in the National Football League. But in one of the top stories of the pro football season, they have run off 10 straight victories, and come into the playoffs with as big a head of steam as anybody. They will need it, as they face another hot squad in the Houston Texans in a wild-card round matchup that begins at 4:35 PM ET on Saturday. Since Kansas City did not win the AFC West (that distinction going to the Denver Broncos), they have to go on the road to advance. Jamaal Charles was hurt in the fifth game of the season, an 18-17 loss to the Chicago Bears, so this team had to improvise in a hurry. They turned to the previously-unknown Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware and have suddenly rebuilt one of the NFL’s best rushing games. West has 634 yards on the season, while Ware has averaged 5.6 yards per carry, and between the two, they have ten touchdown runs. When you factor in the 498 yards produced on the ground by Alex Smith, the quarterback, this is a team that will certainly look to move the chains over land.

The defense has gotten the job done as well during this 10-game winning streak. The Chiefs have yielded only 12.8 points per game during that stretch, and they are allowing only 33% success on the part of their opponents in third-down situations. No wonder there is cause for excitement around the Kansas City camp.

In point of fact, the Chiefs have averaged 26 more yards per game on the ground after losing Charles to his injury. West and Ware were not really part of the rotation when Kansas City met Houston on this field in the season opener. Miscues by Houston quarterback Brian Hoyer helped the Chiefs get off to a 21-0 lead, and a rally led by Ryan Mallett, who came in after Hoyer was benched, was not enough as Kansas City won a 27-20 decision.

One of the things that is notable is that Kansas City was able to shift the turnover factor greatly in its favor during the winning streak, compiling a +16 margin. Smith threw only seven interceptions, and went without an interception for one stretch that was second-longest in the history of the NFL. BetAnySports patrons should take note that in his three playoff starts, Smith has tossed nine touchdown passes without being picked off. And even though he was sacked 45 times, he has done a good job of avoiding such a thing lately, with only seven sacks suffered in the last four games.

It’s probably a good idea to keep an eye on some of Kansas City’s defensive personnel here; the two best pass rushers they have – Justin Houston and Tamba Hali – have been battling injuries, although anyone in their right mind would expect they would be in uniform and in the lineup on Saturday. How effective they will be is a different story. It’s important that these guys get some pressure on the passer, because the secondary obviously feeds off it, with 22 interceptions. The two guys in the defensive backfield who really stood out were corner Marcus Peters, a rookie out of Washington who was the team’s first-round pick and who was named to the Pro Bowl, and Eric Berry, the perennial All-Pro safety who made a gallant comeback from Hodgkin’s lymphoma this season.
