The Cleveland Browns have been stubborn in their insistence about using Josh McCown as their starting quarterback. And some of that is understandable, in that he is this year’s “seat warmer” following the departure of Brian Hoyer. But this week they won’t have a choice. McCown’s rib injuries will force him to miss this week’s game, which means they will have to tab former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel for Thursday night’s game. The opponent here is not ideal – the Cincinnati Bengals are one of four undefeated teams left in the NFL, and they rattled Manziel last season. Game time is 8:25 PM ET at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati. After the opening kickoff, BetAnySports customers will have an opportunity to place their wagers in real-time, as they test themselves against the football betting odds with Live Betting Extra.

Manziel is 28 for 50 on the season with three touchdown passes. He led this team to a win over the Tennessee Titans in the season’s second week, when McCown was sidelined, and he seemed to connect rather nicely with explosive wide receiver Travis Benjamin. According to a TMZ report from several weeks ago, there were many Browns players who were upset that he wasn’t being give a chance to show what he could do as the starter. But then McCown went on a rather productive streak.

It should be noted that the Browns have said that they EXPECT Manziel to start, but the word is that they will check and see how McCown feels on Thursday. In other words, they are committed to him as their starter, and are not ready to look at guys “for the future” quite yet (although in this case they may be forced to). Judging from what McCown has been saying, it sounds like it would be a difficult proposition. He explained that he has had trouble sleeping and even breathing. You get the impression that he was pushing it just by being on the field last week.

Starting Manziel at quarterback isn’t as scary a proposition as it was last year, when he had “happy feet,” it seems, on almost every pass play. He has fumbled it four times, even though he has thrown only 50 passes and run it just ten times. What this comes down to is how much faith BetAnySports patrons have in him.

The subject of who is going to support Manziel has to be explored. Certainly he can connect on big plays with Benjamin, and tight end Gary Barnidge is an emerging star, with 40 catches for 567 yards and six TD’s. The running game is inconsistent at best; Isaiah Crowell and rookie Duke Johnson are both averaging 3.2 yards per carry, and it appears as if Johnson is going to see some more action this week. This has been an offense based on passing, and Cleveland has converted almost 46% of its third down conversions.

But will that offense operate efficiently through the air with Manziel, or will it be more disjointed?
