USC vs Notre Dame – Irish Seek Revenge Against Forlorn USC Squad

The Southern California Trojans are in a position where they have to take extra care that their season will not get away from them, as they have had to say goodbye to their head coach this past week. On Saturday, USC will pay a visit to South Bend to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in college football betting action that is set to begin at 7:30 PM ET at Notre Dame Stadium. There have been some difficulties in the past involving Steve Sarkissian, who took his “dream job” at Southern Cal after spending five years as the head coach of the University of Washington. Sarkisian, as it turns out, had an alcohol problem as well as an addiction to pain medication. Athletic director Pat Haden had put him in a “zero tolerance” zone, owing to the problem. But apparently Sarkisian could not shake it. The original word that came from the university was that Sarkisian was going to be taking a leave of absence from his job, but about a day later it was announced that he was simply fired. That shocked a lot of people who were not aware of his situation, and undoubtedly caused some unrest among the players. He will be replaced by Clay Helton, the offensive coordinator who has filled in as an interim coach in the past.

It’s difficult at this point for the Trojans, who are coming off their second loss of the season, suffered at the hands of Washington, which took advantage of three USC turnovers. They have had some extra time to get ready, because that game was on a Thursday, and there should not be a dramatic transition, since it was Helton who helped to construct the offensive scheme. But the emotional scars are there.

So what remains constant for the Trojans here? Well, the quarterback who burned Notre Dame in last season’s encounter. We are, of course, talking about Cody Kessler, who started out the season as one of the main Heisman Trophy contenders but has become less relevant in that race with the defeats USC has suffered (besides Washington, they also felt to Stanford). But he was almost flawless in last year’s meeting, as he completed 32 of his 40 passes for 372 yards and six touchdowns in the 49-14 beatdown that Notre Dame took at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Naturally Notre Dame is primed for revenge, and they aren’t the same whipping boy at this point that they had been for Southern Cal previously. After losing eight games in a row to the Trojans, the Irish have covered three of the last five encounters.

BetAnySports customers know that for Notre Dame to emerge victorious here, they have to get something established on the ground. That’s okay, because that was the formula Stanford used against them to grind out an earlier 41-31 victory. And when you talk about the running attack, you’re talking about CJ Prosise, who was converted from being a full-time receiver when Tarean Folston was injured and has emerged as something of a dark course Heisman contender himself. Prosise has averaged 7.1 yards per carry, and his contributions are absolutely essential, since Notre Dame has now had to turn to freshman DeShone Kizer at quarterback. The defense wil have to get back to “normal” after gearing itself up to deal with Navy’s option attack last year.
