FSU Hopes to Have Cook Ready in “Short Order” For Miami

    By Charles Jay

The Miami Hurricanes used to really be a thorn in the side of the Florida State Seminoles; all you ever have to do is say “wide right” in mixed company and you’re going to have a Pier Six brawl on your hands. But since Jimbo Fisher took over the coaching reins in Tallahassee, the ‘Canes have caused nothing more than just minor discomfort, losing five straight meetings. On Saturday these two stalwarts of the Sunshine State renew their rivalry in an ACC games that is set to get underway at 8 PM ET (not the time change) at Doak Campbell Stadium. Florida State has won its first four games of the season, and it has been significant in that it has come under the stewardship of Everett Golson, who made the bold move of leaving Notre Dame and exploring other options for his post-graduate year of eligibility. Golson, who led the Fighting Irish to the national championship game after the 2012 season, was in the process of being displaced by Malik Zaire in South Bend, and left for a program that had a chance to go all the way.

Miami certainly wishes it was coming into this game on a more upbeat note. But the Hurricanes, who had barely escaped after blowing a huge lead against Nebraska, fell to Cincinnati last time out. It was a big disappointment for this defensive unit, which has given up close to 900 yards over the last two games.

Golson hasn’t necessarily been bowling over people with his stats, but there is one that has been a positive – no interceptions in 106 attempts. He is not the most prolific quarterback; in fact, facing a pretty tough Boston College defense a few weeks ago, he passed for only 119 yards. And he is perceived to be someone who lacks pro-level passing skills, and that might hold the ‘Noles back from a genuine national title bid. If you go back to last year, he did throw for 3445 yards and 29 TD’s, but was picked off fourteen times and sustained 27 sacks.

Brad Kaaya, the Miami QB, is a sophomore who is still developing, and BetAnySports customers (as well as NFL scouts) know there is a big upside. In his defense, he hasn’t done a whole lot wrong (just one INT), but you get the sense that if coach Al Golden would make the running game more dominant, he’d be in better shape. He has had to put it up in the air 81 times over the last two games.

And speaking of the running game, potentially the best player on the field Saturday night has had injury questions hanging over his head. FSU’s sophomore running back, Dalvin Cook, who pulled a hamstring against Wake Forest, is listed as a “day to day” proposition, but he made it into practice on Thursday, and you know that if there is anything that can be done to make him available, it will happen. How valuable is Cook? Well, after a freshman campaign in which he gained 1008 yards, he has averaged 8.6 yards a carry with six TD’s already, including a 94-yarder before he had to leave the game against the Demon Deacons.
