Browns Deal With Manziel-McCown Controversy Some More

    By Charles Jay

Last week the Cleveland Browns did the Oakland Raiders a tremendous service, as they supplied them with their first road win in quite a while. They will have to regroup on Sunday as they travel out west for a game against the San Diego Chargers, who are smarting from consecutive road losses. The action is set to get underway at 1 PM ET, and after the game kicks off, don’t forget that BetAnySports customers have the opportunity to make their football picks on the side, total and props with the facilities of Live Betting Extra available.

The Browns will continue to go with Josh McCown as their starting quarterback, as they also continue to advance the theory, disproven time and again, that a team can get to the playoffs with a very mediocre signal-caller. Yes, the fans are calling for Johnny Manziel, but that is only natural. And there is no guarantee he is the answer. Nevertheless, offensive coordinator John DeFilippo says that he will have a package of plays ready for Manziel to use against the Chargers, if the occasion arose to put him in the game.

Cleveland may have to pull some rabbits out of a hat, because the Chargers showed how formidable they can be at home in the opening game, when they overcame an early 21-3 deficit to pin a 33-28 loss on the Detroit Lions.

DeFilippo, along with the other Cleveland coaches, including head man Mike Pettine, obviously feels McCown is the guy who can lead this team to a win, and they were okay with many of the plays he made, although naturally one of them was not the interception with 38 seconds left that killed a drive that could have led to a tying touchdown.

There is some drama to add to the festivities, as TMZ Sports came out with a report that three of the Browns’ offensive starters (quoted anonymously) were furious that Manziel was put back on the bench when McCown got over the league’s concussion protocol. One of them mentioned that the staff “didn’t trust Johnny” the way they trusted McCown, and another said that the coaches were fiddling around with team chemistry by not leaving Manziel in there after he led the team to a 28-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans two weeks ago. As BetAnySports patrons saw, Manziel connected on two long TD passes to Travis Benjamin, who also added a punt return touchdown.

Some of the Cleveland players claimed that the story was made up, but how would they ever know, if the quotes, as reported, were anonymous? There was allegedly a lot of outward support for McCown, who told reports that he had never heard of TMZ before.

So what we have, perhaps, is a divided locker room, and a team “leader” who has won just one of his last twelve starts and is relatively oblivious to the world around him.

Well, they better be well aware of what the Chargers can do. Keenan Allen has been on the receiving end of 29 passes from Philip Rivers, who might be using Malcom Floyd more, as he should; Floyd has averaged 21 yards a catch in the early going.
