Bears Have Massive Task with Backup QB in Seattle

    By Charles Jay

Talk about a team in a rough spot – the Chicago Bears, who were already in peril every time Jay Cutler dropped back to pass, will not have the services of their starting quarterback on Sunday, leaving them in the rather shaky hands of Jimmy Clausen as they make one of the most dangerous trips in the National Football League. The Bears, who have suffered numerous breakdowns on defense and losing their first two games, will have to go to CenturyLink Field for a date with the Seattle Seahawks, which kicks off at 4:25 PM ET on CBS. BetAnySports customers do not have to stop wagering at the opening whistle, as they use Live Betting Extra to test their skills against the pro football betting lines in real time.

Cutler is out with a hamstring injury, and he is joined in that regard by wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey, which makes things doublly difficult for the Bears. Once again, they will have to heavily rely on the multiple talents of running back Matt Forte, who has averaged 5.2 yards per carry thus far and caught nine passes out of the backfield. Clausen cannot be trusted all that much in heaving the ball down the field, so look for a lot of action out of tight end Martellus Bennett. Maybe this is a break for Seattle, which will be going one more week without Kam Chancellor, the Pro Bowl safety who is still holding out over contract issues.

And no doubt the Seahawks, two-time defending NFC champions, are going to be grumpy after their own 0-2 start.

It is quite possible that the public does not believe Chicago will mount much of an offensive attack at all in this one. But more to the point, the defense will certainly have to improve upon their performance over the first two weeks if they are going to cover this impost. The Bears, who are using a 3-4 alignment, have allowed 58% success on the part of opponents on third down. They have yielded 74.5% completions and have not registered a sack as of yet. Jared Allen, usually a reliable pass rusher, is trying to learn the linebacker position, which is mandatory in this scheme.

BetAnySports patrons may remember that Clausen got about as much hype as any quarterback who has ever come out of high school. After a recruiting war, he attended Notre Dame, and that went reasonably well, but he has not been a success at the professional level. When he was with the Carolina Panthers, Clausen lost nine of his 10 NFL starts, and in his brief action in place of Cutler thus far, he has completed 14 out of 23 passes for 121 yards. That is a 5.3-yard average per passing attempt, and it is likely that the Seahawks will relish the opportunity to go up against an attack with limited range. Jeffrey was their guy to go up the field, but he isn’t available. And Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson has a career 22-2 straight-up record starting games at CenturyLink.
