Alabama vs Wisconsin – Game Preview

The Alabama Crimson Tide made it to the four-team national championship playoff last year with the steady hand of Blake Sims at the controls. But after his departure, it left a certain void. Who is going to be the Tide’s starter on Saturday night? Head coach Nick Saban has tried to be cute about it, but whoever is going to be behind center will have a whole lot of talent around him as Alabama goes up against the Wisconsin Badgers of the Big Ten in NCAA football action that gets underway at 8 PM ET at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX (yes, the home of the Dallas Cowboys).

Alabama lost in last season’s semi-final game to Ohio State, which was giving Cardale Jones his second start as a collegian. Jones’ debut was actually against Wisconsin, and the Badgers would love to forget that, although they can’t, because it was a shameful 59-0 defeat in the Big Ten title game. Wisconsin did manage some redemption in the Outback Bowl as it beat Auburn 34-31.

And in the off-season, after coach Gary Andersen took off for Oregon State, Wisconsin brought back Paul Chryst, a former quarterback and offensive coordinator there, to be the new head man, after he had spent three years in that position at Pitt.

By all accounts, there has been a real competition waged at the quarterback position in Tuscaloosa. The presumptive starter would be Jake Coker, a senior transfer from Florida State who threw four touchdown passes last season. But Coker was also expected to be last year’s starter, and he lost out to Sims as he was not impressive enough in drills. We are hearing a story that is often told; that the coach wants to use more than one quarterback in the game, and BetAnySports customers know sometimes that doesn’t turn out all that well. It means that no one has really stepped up and stood out. The likelihood here is that Saban will use two QB’s, but probably not three.

The other candidates, aside from Coker, are junior Alec Morris and redshirt sophomore Cooper Bateman, a touted recruit from the state of Utah who was a kick holder last season. Saban says that Morris has an excellent understanding of the offense, and the word is that Coker has been bothered a little by a toe injury, which may impact his playing status. If they can hand the ball off to Derrick Henry (990 yards last year), a darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate, they may have half the battle won. But they have only two starters coming back on the offensive line.
