    Kyrie Irving’s Game 3 Status to Be Determined By Doctors Alone

    When a team is missing a high-scoring point guard who was in fact the Most Valuable Player of last year’s All-Star Game, that is usually a big deal. But the Cleveland Cavaliers were able to handle that in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference championship series against the Atlanta Hawks. At some point it becomes wiser to just sit him down before he becomes a liability. That is exactly what coach David Blatt did on Friday.

    So we will see what happens with this formidable offensive player who, when it comes down to it, really doesn’t have to be a playmaker.

    The Cavaliers got by with Matthew Dellavedova, a potent outside shooter, taking Irving’s place in the lineup, and there was also a heavy dose of JR Smith (who wasn’t all that effective). Cleveland’s perimeter defense got the job done once again against Atlanta, holding the Hawks to just 6-26 from three-point territory. Jeff Teague had 27 points for the Hawks in Game 1, and he was able to beat Irving off the dribble several times. So perhaps, at least for Friday’s game, it was “addition by subtraction” by giving Irving some rest.

He took a trip down to Florida to visit with Dr. James Andrews, who made the decision that Irving would undergo some different treatment, take new medication and wear a brace. The foot seems a lot better, but the knee is obviously still an issue.

    The Cavaliers could make a decision that Irving get some additional rest, especially with this team having such an advantage heading home for Game 3. But Blatt explained that a doctor is going to make the decision as to whether Irving can play, and whether he does will not be determined by the situation Cleveland is in. If the doctor gives the go-ahead, Irving will see action.
