NBA Betting – Bulls Need Rose to Make Total Return to Form
By Charles Jay
The Cleveland Cavaliers have recently been on a roll, winning 14 out of their last 16 games and climbing back into the thick of things in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. But what is interesting, and should be noted by BetAnySports customers, is the fact that even after all of that, the Chicago Bulls, who whipped the Cavs in the last game before the All-Star break, are still ahead of them in the standings – by a game and a half, in fact. And you really can’t say that the Bulls have really been at full strength for any length of time. That would seem to bode well for this team as we go into the final third of the regular season.
Things are pretty tight in the East, because the Atlanta Hawks are suddenly a powerhouse, while the Washington Wizards and Milwaukee Bucks have been something of a surprise. First place in the Central Division is going to be meaningful, because it brings with it a top-four seed in the playoffs, and we have no idea what is going to happen with the second place squad.
Chicago is 34-20 straight-up and 25-29 against the basketball pointspread. Currently they are listed at +410 to win the Eastern Conference title at BetAnySports, trailing Cleveland (+130) and Atlanta (+255). They are in this position despite the fact that Joakim Noah has missed some time with injury, as has Mike Dunleavy and Kirk Hinrich. When these guys have all hands on deck they can be a pretty formidable, deep crew. And if they can raise their defensive game a bit, the conference title is out of reach.
Not that these guys can’t defend; they know how. They are just not doing it as well as they have been accustomed. Free agent acquisition Pau Gasol has really paid off with 18 points and twelve rebounds a game, but he is not a defensive intimidator the way Noah or Taj Gibson might be. But when you look at the Bulls, they can throw some muscle out there; let’s not forget that Nikola Mirotic has also been a pleasant surprise in his rookie season.
Derrick Rose is the straw that stirs the drink, so to speak, and he shows flashes of his former self out there. A key for this team, which is +800 at BetAnySports to win the NBA title, will be how well he distributes the ball. At the beginning of the season they were going easy with him, as might be expected when a guy has gone out with injury the last couple of years. But he appears to coming on nicely, with 25 assists and just three turnovers in the last three games. When Rose was absent, Jimmy Butler elevated his status from key reserve to All-Star, and he can be a great compliment to the former MVP, IF Rose doesn’t try to do too much by himself.
The Bulls are perfectly capable of advancing through the East, but there are going to be obstacles. Few people expected that the Hawks would become “Spurs East,” and the Cavs went out and added some key people to bolster the supporting cast around LeBron. Washington is also a potential land mine. Navigating the post-season waters will be how Rose will demonstrate that he’s truly back.
