College Basketball Betting: Baylor Tries to Even Score vs Oklahoma
By Charles Jay
The Oklahoma Sooners got a tremendous effort from a transfer who has come of age the last time they played the Baylor Bears. On Saturday, they re going after the season sweep in college basketball betting action that is set to begin at 6 PM ET at the Farrell Center in Waco.
As they move into another weekend of play in the ultra-competitive Big 12, Oklahoma has a record of 12-6 straight-up and 9-7 against the basketball pointspread. Baylor is 14-4 straight-up and 6-6 ATS. The Sooners are ranked #19 in the country in the Associated Press poll and #20 in the USA Today coaches poll. Baylor is ranked #21 in both major polls.
Oklahoma as last seen losing an 85-78 decision at Kansas, which came after they had made up all of a 20-point deficit and took a late lead. There have been three disappointing efforts in the last four Big 12 games for OU, although they followed that initial victory over Baylor with a resounding 70-49 win on the road against Texas.
The Bears have been involved in some very tight games. They lost by a point to Kansas and two points to Kansas State. They also defeated Iowa State by a point ten days ago. They had a bit of a “warmup” game three nights ago with a 81-61 win over Huston Tillotson University, an NAIA entry, which was actually played because it was originally intended to provide scenes for a movie (which actually isn’t going to be made).
In the college basketball betting odds that have been placed om this game by the people at BetAnySports, homestanding Bears are the slight favorites:
Baylor Bears -2
Oklahoma Sooners +2
The challenge for Oklahoma is clear – they have to be able to deal with the size of Baylor, which almost always seems to do a great job on the boards. The Bears have a robust +9.9 rebounding margin, but of course they don’t shoot all that well. In that previous meeting, Baylor put together some creative zone schemes and held Oklahoma below 41% from the field.
Baylor needs to cover a lot of ground in the half court, because Oklahoma has a trio of rather capable scorers. Aside from Buddy Hield, who is one of the top Big 12 scorers at 17.6 points per game, there is Thomas, and also Isaiah Cousins who joins Hield in the backcourt. But BetAnySports customers know that this has been a Jekyll-and-Hyde squad, which laid down, it appeared, at West Virginia.
Baylor has a couple of things it can count on; Kenny Cherry, the Canadian native, is a relatively sure-handed point guard who also averages 11.2 points a game. Rico Gathers is the man who provides muscle on the glass, with 11.2 rebounds per contest (and 28 in the game against the NAIA team). With all of the close games Baylor seems to find itself in, the concept of “easy baskets” is going to be very important.
For Oklahoma, it becomes an interesting psychological situation, as they may be encouraged about the way they were able to come all the way back in Lawrence, but at the same time could be dejected about not being able to finish the job. In this conference, everybody is in pretty close quarters, and all of them would like to break Kansas’ string of ten consecutive seasons with at least a share of the Big 12 title.
