AFC Playoff Betting Odds – Bengals Look For “Bad Luck” vs Colts
By Charles Jay
The Cincinnati Bengals have become famous for their first-round exits in the playoffs. On Sunday they are going to try to change all of that around, as they face off against the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC wild-card game, as football betting action is scheduled to kick off at 1:05 PM ET at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
The Bengals had an opportunity to win the AFC North and host a first-round game, but they lost 27-17 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the season finale. They come into this game with a record of 10-5-1 straight-up, and they are 8-8 against the football pointspread. The Colts clinched the AFC South in the 14th game of the season when they be Houston. They finished with a record of 11-5 straight-up and ATS.
This game is a rematch of an earlier encounter in this building, as the Bengals, who were coming off a beating at the hands of the New England Patriots and a tie at home with the Carolina Panthers, were shut out 27-0, gaining just 135 yards and giving up 506 two Indianapolis. Was that an indication of the matchup advantages the Colts bring into this game?
In the AFC Playoff betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Colts are the favorites at home:
Indianapolis Colts -3 (-130)
Cincinnati Bengals +3 (+110)
Over 48.5 points -110
Under 48.5 points -110
The Colts have lost only once at home, and that was in the second game of the season, when Nick Foles led the Philadelphia Eagles back from a double-digit deficit on a Monday night. Since then they have won all of their games at Lucas Oil Stadium by at least seven points. That included the rout of the Bengals, which took place as Cincinnati was missing AJ Green.
They might be without him again. Green, the wide receiver who leads the team with 1041 yards, suffered a concussion against Pittsburgh last week and is officially listed as doubtful, which means there is about a 75% chance that he won’t be able to make post. While he participated in a light practice on Thursday, he did not practice at all on Friday, and he had not yet passed the NFL’s concussion protocol.
BetAnySports customers need to take note that the Bengals have never won a playoff game on the road, and if they don’t have Green, it would not present the kind of conditions to break that awful trend. But there is a “wild card” in this wild card game, and that is the fact that Cincinnati has developed a ground game with some authority. They already had Giovanni Bernard, who is more of a “scatback” type, but since the eighth game of the season (after the loss at Indy) they have given 240-pound bruiser Jeremy Hill extensive work, and the rookie out of LSU has given them answers, rushing for 1124 yards overall and averaging more than five yards a carry. The Colts sometimes do a good job against the run, but sometimes don’t, so the presence of Hill could change the dynamic of things.
Football bettors know that Cincinnati will need for that to happen, because the quarterback matchup is no contest. Andrew Luck has 40 touchdown passes and 4781 yards, and is, of course, a master of the fourth-quarter comeback, while Andy Dalton has just 19 TD passes and 17 interceptions.
