NFL Betting – Philbin Under Fire as Dolphins Host Vikings
By Charles Jay
The Miami Dolphins are enduring anther season where they are not making the playoffs, thanks to subpar performances the last couple of weeks. Now they are facing the usual questions surrounding their coaching staff as they approach Sunday’s home game against the Minnesota Vikings. NFL betting action is slated to begin at 1 PM ET at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Miami blew a double-digit lead against the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago and put themselves behind the eight-ball, then were blown away by the New England Patriots 41-32 last Sunday, which eliminated them from the wild card race. Even though Miami can improve on last year’s 8-8 record, there has been justifiable speculation about the future of head coach Joe Philbin, with owner Stephen Ross having run out of patience. There are some “name” candidates who could be on the market, including Jim Harbaugh, who is said to be near the end in San Francisco.
The Dolphins are 7-7 straight-up, and 7-6-1 against the football pointspread. The Vikings are 6-8 straight-up, which means they can still reach the .500 mark in Mike Zimmer’s first season at the helm. Minnesota is also 9-5 ATS.
In the NFL betting odds that have been posted on this game at BetAnySports, the Dolphins are favored by almost a touchdown:
Miami Dolphins -6.5
Minnesota Vikings +6.5
Over 42 points -110
Under 42 points -110
The Vikings have become decidedly more aggressive on defense this season, which is understandable, since Zimmer had a hard-nosed reputation in his days as defensive coordinator in Cincinnati. They’ve recorded 38 quarterback sacks, and caused Matthew Stafford fits last week at Ford Field. The Lions had only eleven first downs and 233 first downs on the afternoon
But the Vikings just couldn’t put together enough offense, despite a 31-for-41, 315-yard effort from rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Running the football has become very problematic with this team, especially without rookie Jerick McKinnon, who had shown a great deal of progress subbing for the suspended Adrian Peterson (with 4.8 yards per carry), and BetAnySports customers know that lack of balance can, of course, be exploited by the opposing team.
The Vikings are hoping that they can get some rushing yards out of a recent acquisition. Ben Tate was sent packing by Cleveland and has come over to the Vikings. With Matt Asiata (3.3 ypc) clearly not an answer, Minnesota needs to find ground support from somewhere if they hope to win these final two games against Miami and Chicago and even up their record.
Most of the media in south Florida are of the general opinion that Philbin will get his walking papers at the end of the season. The team goes through periods where it looks to NFL bettors very much like a playoff-caliber squad, but then the late-season fade takes them out of contention. A determination also has to be made about the future of Ryan Tannehill, who they probably have more of a possibility of moving forward with. Tannehill at least has double the number of touchdowns as he does interceptions (22 to 11)
