Chiefs Have Big Opportunity Against Broncos

    By Charles Jay

The Denver Broncos may not have looked much like themselves lately, but the fact remains that they are the first-place team in the AFC West. On Sunday they will try to beat back the challenge of the Kansas City Chiefs, who are right on their tail and who will be hosting NFL betting action at Arrowhead Stadium, kicking off at 8:30 PM ET, and televised live on NBC.

Denver has suffered two ignominious losses in their last four games, overwhelmed 43-21 at New England and experiencing a flat spot in a 22-7 loss in St. Louis. Last week they were down by eleven points at the end of three quarters against the Miami Dolphins, but rallied for 22 points over the final fifteen minutes in winning a 39-36 decision. Peyton Manning had four touchdown passes in that game, bringing his season total to 34. Denver is now 8-3 straight-up, although they are only 5-6 against the football pointspread.

Kansas City is coming off its most disappointing performance of the season. By definition, it would have to be, since they lost to a team (the Oakland Raiders) that was 0-10 going into the contest. Before that, the Chiefs had been on a run where they had won seven out of eight games and had covered nine in a row. The offense was extremely disappointing in Oakland, converting only two out of 14 third-down situations. The Chiefs have their work cut out for them here, because they have lost five straight games to the Broncos. That included a 24-17 defeat in the second week of the season, which came despite the fact that Kansas City rolled up 28 first downs.

In the Sunday night NFL betting odds established by the people at BetAnySports, Denver is a slight favorite on the road:

    Denver Broncos -1.5
    Kansas City Chiefs +1.5

    Over 49.5 points -110
    Under 49.5 points -110

Denver goes into this game short on running backs. Ronnie Hillman and Montae Ball are doubtful to play, but they were bailed out by CJ Anderson last week, as he ran for 167 yards against Miami. Obviously when this team can work up a running game, it gives Manning more flexibility. He’s got two of the best guys in the business on the flanks, as Demariyus Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders have both exceeded 1000 yards receiving already. They would seem to be a question as to whether tight end Julius Thomas can play, and if he does, how effective he will be, since Kansas City has allowed only eleven receptions on the part of tight ends of the last five games.

BetAnySports customers also realize that the game-within-a-game involves whether Kansas City can get enough pressure on Manning. Justin Houston is the top sack-master in the NFL right now with 13, and he will be coming hard. But Manning has been sacked only a dozen times, so will the effect of the Kansas City pass rush be mitigated? Most NFL bettors are aware that Kansas City’s offense is not necessarily all that balanced, in the respect that Alex Smith, who has 65% completions, mostly in “safety-first” mode, has still not thrown a touchdown pass to a wide receiver. After eleven games on a team that is a playoff contender, that is absolutely astounding. Jamaal Charles anchors the running game (5.1 yards per carry), and that should help the Chiefs, since this could wind up being a game of field position.

BetAnySports patrons should keep in mind that both of these teams have held the opposition below 37% in third-down conversions. Denver has had some problems kicking field goals when they are stopped on third down, so they have gone out and signed former Chiefs kicker Connor Barth. The Chiefs, who can tied for the AFC West lead with a victory here, will have to do it without safety Eric Berry, who is out of action and may have lymphoma.
