NFL Odds Preview – Giants Carry Longest Current Skid Into Jacksonville
By Charles Jay
You know, it’s interesting; the Jacksonville Jaguars have a record of 1-10 as they head into football action this coming weekend. But the New York Giants are the team that has the longest current losing streak in the league. The Boys in Blue have an opportunity to end that losing string on Sunday as they tangle with the Jaguars in an attempt to win straight-up, and for purposes of those enthusiasts at BetAnySports, beat the NFL odds, and again kicking off at 1 PM ET at Everbank field in Jacksonville.
Last week the Giants were very competitive, but they nonetheless lost their sixth straight game as they fell 31-28 to the Dallas Cowboys. They did manage their first cover against the football pointspread in their last six games. However, it was a result that may have pushed Tom Coughlin one step closer to the door. On Sunday Coughlin returns to the area where he became very popular as he guided the Jacksonville franchise in its formative years, highlighted by an appearance in the AFC championship game in the team’s second season.
The Jags have had tremendous difficulty putting together two halves of football. This goes all the way back to the season opener, when they jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead against the Philadelphia Eagles, only to let the Eagles roll up 34 unanswered points in the second half and take the Jaguars through an odyssey that saw them lose their first six games. Fast forward to last week against Indianapolis, where NFL betting observers smelled an upset as they were down only 6-3 to the Colts at the half. But there was no further scoring from Jacksonville, which fell 23-3.
In the NFL odds that a been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Giants are laying a field goal on the road, which is obviously a strange position for team with a six-game losing streak to be:
New York Giants -3
Jacksonville Jaguars +3
Over 45 points -110
Under 45 points -110
Certainly there are some encouraging signs for the Giants. One of them is the fact that Rashad Jennings, a former Jaguar, has returned to the lineup. He is not only a dependable runner who can pound out the yardage, but he also catches passes out of the backfield, and all of that is critical when trying to play a West Coast offense. And there is no question that as long as there are NFL highlights, they are going to include the one-handed catch made by Odell Beckham to score a touchdown against the Cowboys. What is important here, as BetAnySports customers know, is the Giants’ mood after being officially eliminated from the NFC playoff race. They led Dallas in the waning moments, but allowed the Cowboys to go 80 yards in seven plays, and on some of those plays, Tony Romo had an embarrassing amount of time to pick at his receivers. Defensive coordinator Percy Fewell has caught a lot of abuse from his decision-making in that instance. And this can’t be an “up” atmosphere at the moment.
Blake Bortles has been for a lot of rough spots for Jacksonville (such as 15 interceptions and 27 sacks) during his apprenticeship, but there is a strong possibility that running back Denard Robinson (4.5 yards per carry) can do some business against a New York defense that has given up 4.9 yards per rushing attempt. And Jacksonville should be able to put some pressure on Eli Manning, because they have one of the better pass rushes in the league, chalking up 33 sacks in the process of playing the aggressive kind of style Gus Bradley was known for when he was the defensive coordinator in Seattle.
