    For the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and USC Trojans, there is going to be a bowl game invitation waiting, but they clearly where they wanted to be, or where they expected to be, at this point in time. For the Irish there has been a certain extra frustration, as they seemed on the brink of getting some consideration for the college football playoff but are coming into this regular season finale with three straight defeats. Football betting action in one of the game’s most colorful rivalries gets underway at 3:30 PM ET on Saturday.

    The boys from South Bend won their first six games, and probably gained an awful lot of credibility from doubters with a very close and dramatic loss to Florida State, in which a controversial offensive pass interference penalty prevented them from scoring a go-ahead touchdown in the waning moments. But things haven’t gone well since, as they were extended to their limit in beating Navy, and have been beaten consecutively by Arizona State, Northwestern and Louisville. In these last four games, they have allowed 168 points.

    USC has probably demonstrated more resilience, because at least the Trojans were able to bounce back from a heart-breakling loss to Arizona State, in which they were beaten by a last-second Hail Mary pass, to post vioctories over Arizona and Colorado. But they have lost four games nonetheless. And they were beaten thoproughly again by Jim Mora-coached UCLA last week (38-20).

He had a difrficult time of it last week, as he had only one touchdown pass after tossing 18 in the previous four games. There is no accident in his ratio of 30 TD’s to four interceptions.

    USC’s Nelson Agholor, who had chalked up 436 yatrds in receiving yards against the weak defenses of Washington State and California, was held to just three catches for 24 yards against UCLA last week. Is the Notre Dame defense banged-up enough for him to be a dominant force here?
