Eagles Turn to Sanchez to Keep Them in Playoff Picture

    By Charles Jay

The Philadelphia Eagles are a team that has dealt with adversity this season and continues to forge ahead. Now they are faced with a situation where they have lost a key player, but coach Chip Kelly, the eternal optimist, is looking upon it as an opportunity. On Monday night the Eagles will play host to the Carolina Panthers in NFL betting action that is set to get underway at 8:30 PM ET at Lincoln Financial Field in the City of Brotherly Love, televised live on ESPN.

Nick Foles, who had such an outstanding season last year, with 27 touchdowns and only two interceptions, had been having a tough time of it in 2014, with thirteen turnovers, and then he cracked his collarbone last week against the Houston Texans. So Mark Sanchez, who BetAnySports customers remember from his days with the New York Jets (which weren’t that long ago, by the way), stepped in and completed 15 of his 22 passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions. It was not a Hall of Fame-worthy performance, but it did get the Eagles through the game and a 31-21 victory. Sanchez will start this contest, and will presumably be the #1 quarterback until Foles is ready to return.

The Panthers are a team looking for answers. They have gone 1-5-1 straight-up over their last seven games, and never seem to have a complete unit out there. Of course, it creates a big hole in your defense when a player like Greg Hardy is missing (suspended pending a domestic violence charge), and their defensive line is allowing an uncharacteristic 4.8 yards per carry. Carolina has Cam Newton at quarterback, but this is not a team that has overachieved on offense either. Newton was particularly disappointing last time out at home against New Orleans, as he completed just 10 of his 28 passes in the 28-10 loss to the Saints.

Monday Night NFL Betting Lines – Eagles vs Panther: the Eagles are, of course, the favorites:

    • Philadelphia Eagles -7 (+105)
    • Carolina Panthers +7 (-125)
    • Over 48 points -110
    • Under 48 points -110

Carolina finds itself with an offensive line that has been hurting, and that isn’t good news for Newton, who has dealt with injuries to his leg and ribs and has been sacked 21 times. This is a guy who should be more careful, so there is no reason he should be only six yards off the team rushing lead right now. But that’s exactly where he is, as DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart had either been injured or unable to provide real answers while healthy. It is true that rookie Kelvin Benjamin (40 receptions, 589 yards) has been a nice addition to the attack, but BetAnySports patrons know that there really isn’t anyone threatening on the other side.

Philadelphia rides an eight-game home winning streak into this Monday night contest, and they have had offensive line injury problems as well. They have gotten a little healthier in that regard, however, and LeSean McCoy, who led the NFL in rushing last season, has averaged over 100 yards per game over his last three outings. Darren Sproles, the explosive dual threat, has returned to action for the Eagles as well, and that puts further pressure on the Carolina secondary.

The Eagles have held opposing quarterbacks to 56.5% completions, which is outstanding in this day and age, so Newton had better make his throws count. What Philadelphia needs to solve is a turnover problem; their ratio this season is minus-10, and it’s hard to imagine them going far in the post-season (provided they get there) if that trend continues. Right now, as BetAnySports customers know, a lot rides on the shoulders of Sanchez, who was infamous for his “butt-fumble” internationally-televised game with the Jets, but also helped guide the team to the AFC title game in his first two years as a pro. He appears to be extremely enthusiastic about Kelly’s offense, and more philosophical now, having had to sit out the entire 2013 season with a shoulder injury.
